The first-generation C4 Picasso with the 2.0 HDi offered significantly more torque than the 1.6 HDi for families needing to haul a loaded seven-seat Grand variant. The DW10 engine family is one of PSA's most durable diesels, used across millions of Peugeot, Citroën, and Ford vehicles. Available with 136, 150, or 163 hp depending on the engine code and year, it paired with either a 6-speed manual or the EGS automated-manual gearbox. Parts are cheap and widely understood by independent garages across Europe.· more· less

Proven DW10 diesel, strong torque Affordable parts, wide availability
Complex electrics, BSI prone to faults Air suspension issues on Grand variants
Buy if: You need an affordable family MPV with strong diesel torque for motorway driving and towing, and can find one with a manual gearbox, complete service history, and verified timing belt status.
Avoid if: You mostly make short urban trips (DPF and EGR will suffer), want the EGS automated gearbox, or are looking at a Grand variant with air suspension you cannot budget to repair.

Common Problems
Durable engine, but platform complexity adds cost
The DW10 2.0 HDi is one of PSA's most proven diesel engines and does not suffer from the turbo oil starvation problem that plagues the smaller 1.6 HDi. High-mileage examples with 200,000+ km exist when properly maintained. However, the C4 Picasso Mk1 platform brings its own challenges: BSI electrical faults from water ingress, electronic parking brake wear, heater blower failures, and air suspension problems on Grand variants. The DPF and EGR need regular motorway use to stay healthy. Cars with a manual gearbox, full service history showing regular oil changes, and a recently replaced timing belt are the best prospects. Avoid EGS automated-manual variants and Grand models with faulty air suspension unless you budget for the repair.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Starter motor wiring chafe, risk of fire (July 2006 - October 2010) Critical - verify completed
Seatbelt return rail bolts may loosen (selected production dates) Verify completed
High-pressure fuel rail pipe incorrect torque, risk of fuel leak and fire (selected models) Critical - verify completed
Parking brake cable defect (selected production dates) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator replacement (selected models) Verify completed
Contact Citroën with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The starter motor wiring recall on 2006-2010 cars is particularly critical due to fire risk, even when the engine is switched off.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Mk1 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on all 2006-2013 models
All C4 Picasso Mk1 models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Extended warranty options may be available through third-party providers but typically exclude known wear items like the DPF, DMF, and air suspension on high-mileage cars.

Same car with the smaller DV6 engine. Better fuel economy but the 1.6 has a well-documented turbo oil starvation issue that the 2.0 does not share.
Renault Scenic 2.0 dCi Mk3
Renault Scenic 2.0 dCi Mk3 2009-2016
Direct competitor with the M9R chain-driven diesel. Similar DPF/EGR concerns. Renault has timing chain stretch risk and injectors that seize in the head.
Volkswagen Touran 2.0 TDI 5T
Volkswagen Touran 2.0 TDI 5T 2015-present
More modern MPV with the EA288 diesel. Better build quality and electronics reliability, but significantly more expensive to buy.
Citroën C4 Picasso Mk2 1.6 BlueHDi
Citroën C4 Picasso Mk2 1.6 BlueHDi 2013-2020
Successor generation with improved refinement and a smaller engine. Adds costly AdBlue system failures but has better electronics than the Mk1.
Peugeot 5008 2.0 HDi Mk1
Peugeot 5008 2.0 HDi Mk1 2009-2017
Same DW10 engine in a genuine 7-seat body. Identical powertrain issues. Peugeot has slightly simpler electronics with fewer BSI-related problems.
