2017-2024 · 1.2 PureTech (82-110 hp) 3-cylinder petrol

A charming and affordable French supermini that prioritises comfort over sportiness, with distinctive styling and a surprisingly smooth ride for the segment. The 1.2 PureTech three-cylinder engine is available as a naturally aspirated 82 hp or turbocharged 110 hp unit, both using the EB2 engine family with its infamous wet timing belt. The C3 Mk3 sold well across Europe from 2017 to 2024 and was replaced by the fourth-generation model.

Common Problems
Affordable but requires careful pre-purchase checks
The Citroën C3 Mk3 with the 1.2 PureTech is a pleasant everyday car, but the wet timing belt is a genuine concern that demands attention before purchase. Verify the belt replacement history and oil change records — pre-2019 belts are the most problematic, and PSA improved the belt material from late 2018 onwards. The naturally aspirated 82 hp version is simpler than the turbo (no high-pressure fuel pump, no direct injection), which reduces some failure points. Regular oil level checks between services, annual oil changes with the correct specification, and belt replacement by 80,000 km or 6 years significantly reduce the risk of costly engine damage. Cars with complete Citroën service history are the safest buy.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Takata airbag inflator — propellant may degrade and rupture in a crash, causing injury from metal fragments (2009-2019 production, stop-drive notice issued) Critical - verify completed
Timing belt premature degradation — belt may wear prematurely due to aged engine oil, risking engine damage (2017-2020 production) Verify completed
High-pressure fuel hose — nuts on high-pressure pump may loosen, causing fuel leak and fire risk (2024-2025 production, Gen3 engine only) Verify if applicable
Contact Citroën with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The Takata airbag recall is particularly critical — affected C3 models built between 2009 and 2019 are subject to a stop-drive notice until the airbag is replaced. Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on most used C3 Mk3 models
Stellantis PureTech support programme Up to 10 years / 180,000 km for wet belt and oil consumption issues (requires documented service history)

Most used C3 Mk3 models are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. The Stellantis PureTech compensation programme (launched March 2024) may cover timing belt and oil consumption repairs for qualifying vehicles under 10 years old with documented service history using PSA-approved oil. Check eligibility with a Citroën dealer using your VIN.
