The first-generation C3 replaced the Saxo as Citroën's supermini and offered a notably comfortable ride for the segment. The 1.4 HDi uses the PSA DV4TD common-rail turbodiesel, a compact and well-proven engine shared with the Peugeot 206 and 207. It returns genuine 4.5-5.0 L/100 km in mixed driving and parts are very cheap across Europe. The car was sold with both manual and SensoDrive automated-manual transmissions.· more· less

Very low fuel consumption Cheap parts, widely available
Electrical gremlins (BSI, ECU) Front coil springs can fracture
Buy if: You want a frugal diesel city car with a manual gearbox and can find one with proof of regular oil changes and no history of electrical issues.
Avoid if: You are looking at a SensoDrive variant, or the car has unknown service history with no evidence of timing belt or oil changes.

Common Problems
Simple and frugal, but aging electrics need watching
The DV4TD engine is fundamentally solid and can exceed 200,000 km when maintained with regular oil changes and quality fuel. The 8v version is notably more reliable than the 16v variant, which PSA discontinued relatively quickly. The main ownership risks are shared with most PSA cars of this era: BSI electrical faults, ECU water damage, and EGR clogging on short-trip cars. The front coil spring recall should be verified, and SensoDrive-equipped cars should be avoided unless the gearbox has been recently overhauled. Manual gearbox examples with complete service history represent the best ownership proposition.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Front suspension spring retaining cups (2002-2005 production, selected VIN ranges) Verify completed
Front suspension wishbone mounting bolt specification (early production) Verify completed
Rear screen seal defect potentially causing water ingress to boot (selected production runs) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator (some 2008-2009 models may be affected) Verify if applicable
The front suspension spring recall is particularly important on the Mk1 C3. Contact a Citroën dealer with the VIN to verify whether retaining cups have been fitted. Not all VIN ranges were covered by the recall, so even uncovered cars should have their springs inspected. Later production 2008-2009 models should also be checked for Takata airbag applicability.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Mk1 C3s
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on all Mk1 C3s
All C3 Mk1 models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty and the 12-year rust perforation warranty. No extended warranty programmes are available from Citroën for vehicles of this age. Third-party warranty providers may offer cover, but exclusions for pre-existing electrical faults and high-mileage components are common.

Fiat-sourced MultiJet diesel. Similarly economical but has timing chain stretch issues that the belt-driven C3 avoids.
