Citroën Berlingo Mk3 1.5 BlueHDi

Last updated: January 2026

2018-present (K9) · 1.5 BlueHDi 90/120/130 hp diesel

Practical family MPV and van favourite, built on the Stellantis EMP2 platform shared with Peugeot Partner and Opel Combo. The 1.5 BlueHDi diesel is fuel-efficient and widely available in parts, but has a serious timing chain design flaw affecting engines made before January 2023. Stellantis extended coverage to 10 years for this issue, so verify service history and warranty status carefully. AdBlue and DPF systems also need attention, especially if the car is used mostly for short trips. Manual gearbox preferred over the ETG6 semi-automatic.

Practical and affordable, but the timing chain demands vigilance
The Berlingo Mk3 is an excellent value proposition as a family MPV or small business workhorse. Parts are plentiful and shared across the Stellantis group (Peugeot Partner, Opel Combo). However, the 1.5 BlueHDi timing chain flaw is a genuine concern on pre-2023 engines. Stellantis's 10-year extended coverage helps significantly — but only if service history is complete and repairs go through an authorised dealer. Prioritise manual gearbox cars and verify the cam housing part number before purchase.

1.5 BlueHDi timing chain — extended coverage (Stellantis, 2025) 10 yr / 150,000 mi
Contact a Citroën dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The timing chain extended coverage is not a formal recall but a special warranty programme — confirm eligibility with the dealer. At least 7 separate recalls have been issued for the Mk3 Berlingo.

The standard 2-year factory warranty has expired on all used Berlingos. However, Stellantis's special coverage for the 1.5 BlueHDi timing chain is significant: 10 years or 150,000 miles covering 100% parts and labour. Conditions: last three services must be on time (up to 3 months / 3,000 km delay permitted), correct oil viscosity used, and repairs performed through an authorised Stellantis dealer. Spoticar and authorised dealer pre-owned purchases include a "Check+" certificate transferring this coverage to the new owner.
