The Citroën C3 Mk2 is a comfortable French supermini with a quiet, refined ride and low running costs. The 1.6 HDi diesel uses the PSA DV6 engine, found across many Peugeot, Citroën, Ford, and Volvo models. It delivers strong fuel economy around 4.0 l/100 km but demands careful maintenance, particularly around oil changes and injector seals, to avoid the well-documented turbo carbon contamination problem.· more· less

Turbo vulnerable to oil sludge Injector seal leaks cause damage
Buy if: You need an economical diesel for longer commutes, can verify full service history with on-time oil changes, and avoid the EGS automated gearbox.
Avoid if: You mainly do short urban trips (DPF clogging), the service history is incomplete, or the car has the EGS automated manual gearbox.

Common Problems
Reliable when well maintained, but turbo and injector seals need attention
The 1.6 HDi DV6 engine can reach high mileages when properly maintained, but it is notably less forgiving of neglect than some competitors. The turbo oil feed contamination and injector seal issues are well-documented and interconnected: poor oil maintenance leads to carbon buildup that damages both systems. Cars with complete service history, regular oil changes, and predominant motorway use tend to be significantly more reliable than urban-only examples with patchy records. The manual gearbox is strongly preferred over the EGS automated manual. Verify all recalls, particularly the critical Takata airbag stop-drive order.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Takata airbag inflator rupture risk (2009-2017 production, stop-drive order issued) Critical - verify completed
Battery earth cable breakage causing engine cutout (2010-2012 production) Verify completed
Front subframe/suspension mounting bolts insufficient torque (2009-2010 production) Verify completed
Front subframe left mounting point manufacturing damage (2009-2011 production) Verify completed
Front brake hose deformation reducing braking efficiency (2009-2010 production) Verify completed
Parking brake efficiency reduction (2010-2011 production) Verify completed
The Takata airbag recall is critically important. Citroën issued a stop-drive order for affected vehicles in 2025, meaning unrepaired cars should not be driven and may not be insurable. Contact a Citroën dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed before purchasing.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Mk2 C3s
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply on 2014-2016 models
All C3 Mk2 models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. The 12-year rust perforation warranty may still cover later models built in 2014-2016 for corrosion that starts from the inside out.
