The second-generation C4 is a comfort-oriented French hatchback with soft suspension and a roomy interior. The 1.6 THP uses the BMW/PSA co-developed Prince engine (EP6CDT), the same turbocharged four-cylinder found in the Peugeot 308, DS3, and MINI Cooper S. It offers decent mid-range performance but comes with a well-documented list of reliability concerns that demand strict maintenance discipline.· more· less

Buy if: You want a comfortable compact with decent performance and can find one with complete service history showing frequent oil changes and a recently serviced timing chain.

Common Problems
High-maintenance engine that demands strict servicing and proactive care
The 1.6 THP Prince engine is the main reliability concern on the C4 Mk2. Timing chain stretch, turbo housing cracks, high-pressure fuel pump failures, and carbon buildup on intake valves are all well-documented across the EP6 engine family. Pre-2013 cars are most at risk for timing chain issues. Short oil change intervals (maximum 10,000 km with quality 5W-30 synthetic), frequent spark plug replacement, and regular spirited driving all help extend component life. A well-maintained C4 with a recently serviced timing chain can reach 150,000+ km, but deferred maintenance tends to cascade into compound failures.
