Known Issues most common first
AdBlue system failure (tank/pump/sensor) €800 - 1,500
Vent valve fails, overworks the pump, triggers UREA warning and engine start prevention countdown · more· less
The 1.6 BlueHDi uses an AdBlue (urea) injection system for NOx reduction. The most common failure involves the vent valve in the filler cap not working properly, causing the pump to work too hard and eventually fail. Symptoms include a flashing UREA warning light, an "engine will not restart in X km" countdown, and emission fault messages. The pump is integrated into the tank and cannot be replaced separately, meaning the entire tank assembly must be replaced. PSA issued a service campaign to replace the filler cap with a pressure-relief valve version, which prevents the issue if caught early. If the pump has already failed, replacement costs €800-1,050 for the part alone. Total repair at a dealer runs €1,200-1,500. Aftermarket units from Eastern European suppliers can reduce costs to around €800-1,000 fitted. Models from late 2017 onwards have a revised tank design that is more resistant to this failure.
DPF clogging from short-trip driving €150 - 800
Short urban trips prevent regeneration, soot accumulates until warning light and limp mode · more· less
The Diesel Particulate Filter traps soot and needs periodic passive regeneration at sustained highway speeds (20-30 minutes at 80+ km/h). Short urban trips prevent this cycle from completing, causing progressive soot buildup. Symptoms include a DPF warning light, reduced power, and eventually limp mode. A forced regeneration at a garage costs €100-150. Professional DPF cleaning (off-car) runs €200-400. Full DPF replacement is €500-800 at an independent garage, with OEM units costing more. The C4 also uses Eolys fuel additive to assist DPF regeneration. The additive tank should be topped up during major services (every 120,000 km). Ash accumulation (which cannot be burned off) means even well-used DPFs will eventually need cleaning or replacement at around 150,000-200,000 km.
EGR valve carbon buildup €200 - 550
Carbon deposits cause valve to stick, triggering anti-pollution warning and power loss · more· less
The Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve recirculates exhaust gases to reduce emissions. Carbon deposits accumulate over time, causing the valve to stick open or closed. Symptoms include an anti-pollution warning message, loss of power, rough idle, and engine stalling. The EGR on the 1.6 BlueHDi is awkward to access, requiring removal of the air filter box, battery tray, and surrounding components. Cleaning with brake cleaner or specialist EGR cleaner can work if the issue is caught early (€50-100 at a garage). Replacement valve costs €150-280 for aftermarket (Valeo recommended), with total repair including labor at €300-550. Regular motorway driving helps prevent carbon buildup.
Turbocharger failure €800 - 2,000
Oil starvation or excessive mileage leads to turbo bearing wear and smoke · more· less
Turbo failure on the DV6C (8-valve) engine is less common than on the older 16-valve DV6, thanks to a redesigned and larger oil feed pipe filter. However, it still occurs, typically after 150,000-200,000 km or due to oil starvation from extended service intervals. The 1.6 HDi is known for its recessed sump bung design that prevents complete oil drainage, allowing sludge to build up over time. This sludge can block the turbo oil feed pipe. Symptoms: blue or white exhaust smoke, power loss, and whistling from the engine bay. Remanufactured turbo costs €400-600; new OE turbo €600-900. A dealer quoted one owner £2,500, while an independent garage completed the same work for approximately €1,100. Prevention: change oil every 15,000 km or annually with correct grade, and consider shorter intervals (10,000 km) for older cars.
Injector seal failure (black death) €100 - 2,500
Injector copper washers degrade, allowing combustion gases to leak and deposit thick carbon around injectors · more· less
The injector copper sealing washers can degrade over time, particularly when oil changes are missed. Combustion gases escape past the seal and deposit a thick, coal-like substance around the injector, known as 'black death.' Injector number 3 is most commonly affected. If caught early, replacing the copper washer is a simple repair costing €100-200. However, if left untreated, the escaping gases can cut a groove into the cylinder head injector seat, potentially requiring cylinder head replacement (€1,500-2,500). The DV6C 8-valve version uses proper injector clamps rather than bolts, which is an improvement over the older engine, but seal failure still occurs. Additionally, there have been reports of injector clamps themselves failing, requiring replacement at approximately €15-30 per clamp plus labor. Regular oil changes with the correct specification are critical for prevention.
BSI (body control module) electrical faults €300 - 1,000
Central electronics module corrupts, causing random warning lights, non-start, and electrical glitches · more· less
The BSI (Built-in Systems Interface) controls most of the C4's electrical functions including lighting, central locking, wipers, and the immobilizer. BSI faults can be triggered by a weak battery, water ingress, or battery disconnection without proper procedure. Symptoms range from intermittent warning lights and non-start conditions to central locking failures and incorrect instrument readings. A BSI reset often resolves minor glitches (€50-100 at a diagnostic specialist). If the module needs replacement, it must be programmed to match the engine ECU and key transponders. Specialist repair/reprogramming costs €300-500. Full replacement at a dealer can reach €800-1,000. To reduce risk, always maintain a healthy battery and follow the correct battery disconnection procedure.
Durable engine, but emissions equipment adds risk
The DV6C 1.6 diesel is a proven workhorse that can reach 250,000+ km with regular oil changes. The main cost risks come from the Euro 6 emissions equipment: AdBlue system, DPF, and EGR valve. These are well-documented issues with known fixes. Cars used for regular motorway driving fare significantly better than short-trip urban cars. Verify the AdBlue service campaign cap has been fitted, check for DPF warning history, and ensure oil changes have been done at or below the recommended intervals.

  • Look for smoke on cold start and hard acceleration
Blue smoke indicates turbo oil seal wear. White smoke may indicate head gasket or injector issues. Brief puff of black smoke on hard acceleration is normal.
  • Check for oil pressure warning history
Ask about any STOP oil pressure warnings. The recessed sump bung design can lead to sludge buildup that blocks the oil pickup strainer, especially with extended service intervals.
  • Verify Takata airbag recall completion
C4 models from 2010-2018 are affected by the Takata airbag recall. Some vehicles are under a stop-drive order. Check with a Citroen dealer using the VIN.
  • Test all electrical systems
Check central locking, all windows, dashboard warning lights, cruise control, and air conditioning. BSI faults can cause intermittent electrical failures.
