The second-generation C3 paired with the TU3JP 1.4-litre 8-valve engine is one of the simplest and cheapest superminis to own. The TU3 engine family dates back decades and is shared with the Peugeot 206 and 207, meaning parts are extremely cheap and every independent garage knows how to work on it. No turbo, no direct injection, no timing chain tensioner drama. Running costs are low, though the car does have some well-known weak points around the fuel pump, alternator, and suspension bump stops.· more· less

Buy if: You want the cheapest possible motoring with a proven engine and can verify the Takata airbag recall has been completed.
Avoid if: The airbag recall status is unknown (stop-drive notice applies) or the car has patchy service history with no timing belt record.

Common Problems
Straightforward and cheap to fix when things do go wrong
The C3 Mk2 with the 1.4 TU3JP engine is a fundamentally reliable car. The engine itself has very few inherent weaknesses and can comfortably reach 200,000+ km with basic maintenance. The issues that do arise (fuel pump, alternator, coil pack, thermostat) are all individually inexpensive repairs with widely available parts. No single issue is catastrophic. The main concern when buying is the Takata airbag recall status, which is a safety matter rather than a reliability one.

Citroën C3 1.2 PureTech Mk3
Citroën C3 1.2 PureTech Mk3 2017-present
Newer generation, more refined but introduces the problematic wet timing belt. The old TU3JP engine is simpler and more predictable.
Peugeot 206 1.4 Mk1
Peugeot 206 1.4 Mk1 1998-2012
Same TU3JP engine, very similar reliability. The 206 has rear axle bearing issues; the C3 Mk2 has fuel pump and alternator concerns instead.
Renault Clio III 1.2 16V
Renault Clio III 1.2 16V 2005-2012
Similar reliability tier. Clio III has electrical gremlins and subframe corrosion. The C3's TU3 engine is arguably simpler than the Clio's D4F.
Fiat Punto 1.4 Evo
Fiat Punto 1.4 Evo 2009-2018
Similar segment and era. The Punto's FIRE engine is equally simple but has electric power steering failures and worse corrosion issues.
Citroën C3 Mk3 1.5 BlueHDi
Citroën C3 Mk3 1.5 BlueHDi 2017-present
Newer diesel alternative. More economical on long journeys but adds DPF, AdBlue, and timing chain complexity the 1.4 petrol avoids.
