The stylish French supermini that brought Citroën into the premium city car segment, competing directly with the MINI. The 1.2 PureTech three-cylinder replaced the older 1.6 VTi from 2014, available as a naturally aspirated 82 hp or turbocharged 110/130 hp unit. Distinctive Shark Fin design, a roof that could be personalised, and a genuinely fun driving character earned it a loyal following across Europe.· more· less

Common Problems
The wet belt demands attention, but manageable with proper history
The DS3 with the 1.2 PureTech is a pleasant everyday car, but the wet timing belt is a genuine concern that requires checking before purchase. Verify the belt replacement history and oil change records. Cars from 2014 to 2016 used the earliest belt formulation and are most vulnerable. The naturally aspirated 82 hp version is simpler than the turbo (no high-pressure fuel pump, no direct injection on early cars), which reduces some failure points. Regular oil level checks between services, annual oil changes with the correct PSA-specification oil, and belt replacement by 80,000 km or 6 years significantly reduce the risk of costly engine damage. Stellantis extended the warranty to 10 years or 180,000 km for belt-related failures, which may still cover 2016-2019 cars if the service history is complete.

Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Takata airbag inflator (2009-2019 production) - propellant may degrade and rupture, causing injury from metal fragments. Stop-drive notice issued. Critical - verify completed
Timing belt premature degradation (2015-2018 production) - belt teeth may wear off due to excessive dynamic tension, risking engine damage Verify completed
Vacuum pump belt debris (2013-2017 production) - belt material may damage vacuum pump, reducing brake assist Verify completed
The Takata airbag recall is particularly critical. Citroën and DS Automobiles issued a stop-drive notice for affected vehicles. Contact a Citroën or DS dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed before driving the car.
Warranty Status

Eligibility requires a complete service history with PSA-approved oil. Contact the dealer with the VIN to check.

Audi A1 1.4 TFSI 8X
Audi A1 1.4 TFSI 8X 2010-2018
Premium alternative. Pre-2014 EA111 has its own timing chain issues, post-2014 EA211 is more reliable. Better build quality but less character.
Citroën C3 1.2 PureTech Mk2
Citroën C3 1.2 PureTech Mk2 2013-2016
Same PureTech engine in a more practical body. Identical wet belt and oil consumption risks but cheaper to buy and insure.
Citroën DS3 1.6 HDi
Citroën DS3 1.6 HDi 2010-2015
Diesel variant avoids the wet belt entirely. DPF and EGR concerns for short-trip use, but the 1.6 HDi is a proven and robust unit on motorway routes.
