The first-generation Citroën C3 offered a distinctively styled small car with good comfort for its class. The 1.6 HDi uses the PSA/Ford DV6 common-rail turbodiesel available in 90 hp and 110 hp forms, both sharing the same fundamental engine block and known weak points. Running costs are low when maintained properly, but the turbo oil feed system requires vigilance, and short-trip use accelerates carbon buildup throughout the exhaust system.· more· less

Very economical diesel engine Cheap parts, widely available
Turbo oil feed prone to clogging DPF/EGR sensitive to short trips
Buy if: You want a frugal diesel supermini and can verify complete service history with regular oil changes at shortened intervals.
Avoid if: You mostly do short urban trips (DPF clogging, turbo carbon buildup) or the car has unknown service history with no proof of oil changes.

Common Problems
Reliable when maintained, but turbo and exhaust system need attention
The DV6 1.6 HDi can comfortably exceed 200,000 km with regular oil changes using fully synthetic oil at shortened intervals (10,000 km rather than the factory 20,000 km). The turbo oil feed system is the main vulnerability, and most failures are traceable to extended oil change intervals or short-trip driving. Injector seal leaks should be caught early before they cause secondary damage. Later Mk1 cars with DPF need regular motorway runs to keep the filter healthy.

The Renault 1.5 dCi is widely considered more reliable than the DV6. Fewer turbo failures and simpler exhaust aftertreatment.
Citroën C3 1.4 HDi Mk2
Citroën C3 1.4 HDi Mk2 2009-2016
Next generation with smaller diesel. Improved electronics but introduces ECU water ingress risk. Similar DPF/EGR concerns.
Peugeot 207 1.4 HDi
