The DS3 was Citroën's answer to the MINI, offering distinctive styling and a surprisingly engaging drive. The 1.6 HDi diesel is the sensible choice in the range, delivering strong fuel economy and avoiding the timing chain problems that plagued the 1.6 THP petrol. Two variants were offered: the 92 hp DV6DTED with stop-start and the more powerful 112 hp DV6C, both sharing the same basic architecture and common weak points.· more· less

Far more reliable than 1.6 THP petrol Strong fuel economy, low running costs
Turbo oil feed blockage risk DPF/EGR issues on short-trip cars
Buy if: You want a stylish small car with diesel economy and can verify the turbo oil feed has been maintained with correct oil and regular changes.
Avoid if: You mostly drive short urban trips (DPF and EGR will clog) or the car has missing service history and unknown oil change intervals.

Common Problems
More reliable than its THP sibling, but diesel-specific issues need attention
The DS3 1.6 HDi is a fundamentally sound engine that can reach well over 200,000 km with proper maintenance. The DV6C 8-valve version is notably more dependable than the older 16-valve DV6 used in earlier PSA models. Key to long life is using the correct oil grade, changing it on schedule (or sooner), and driving the car regularly on longer trips to keep the DPF and EGR clear. Cars with documented service history and primarily motorway use are significantly less likely to develop expensive problems.

Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Takata airbag inflator (2009-2016 all DS3 models) - risk of explosive deployment Critical - verify completed
Front suspension control arm bolt specification (Oct-Nov 2013 production) Verify completed
Bonnet lock fixing bolts insufficiently tightened (various production periods) Verify completed
Fuel tank defect with potential leak (selected production runs) Verify completed
The Takata airbag recall is the most critical. In 2025, Stellantis issued a stop-drive order for affected DS3 models across Europe. Contact Citroën with the VIN to verify all recall work has been completed before purchasing. Do not buy a DS3 with an outstanding Takata recall.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all DS3 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply on 2014-2015 models
Takata airbag recall Free repair regardless of age or mileage
All DS3 1.6 HDi models are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Extended warranty options are available through some third-party providers, but coverage for diesel-specific items (turbo, DPF, injectors) varies. The Takata airbag recall repair is free of charge at any Citroën dealer regardless of the car's age.
