The first-generation Citroën C4 offered a distinctive design and a comfortable ride that set it apart from more conventional rivals. The 2.0 HDi with the DW10BTED4 engine is widely regarded as the more robust diesel option in the range, avoiding the turbo oil starvation chain that plagues the smaller 1.6 HDi. Shared with Peugeot and Ford, this engine has a strong track record in commercial use, with many examples exceeding 300,000 km.· more· less

Proven DW10 engine, durable at high km Cheap parts, widely available
Electrical gremlins (BSM, boot wiring) DPF and EGR need regular motorway use
Buy if: You want a cheap, torquey diesel with a proven engine and can verify the timing belt history and that the DPF additive system is functioning.
Avoid if: You mostly drive short urban trips (DPF and EGR will clog) or you need a car with minimal electrical complexity.

Common Problems
Robust engine, but French electrical quirks add complexity
The DW10BTED4 is widely considered one of PSA's most reliable diesel engines, with many examples exceeding 300,000 km in taxi and fleet service. Unlike the smaller 1.6 HDi, the 2.0 does not suffer from the notorious injector seal to turbo oil-feed failure chain. The main concerns are standard diesel-age issues (DPF clogging on short trips, EGR carbon buildup, eventual DMF wear) combined with Citroen-specific electrical weak points (BSM fuse box, boot wiring, power steering). Cars with documented motorway use, regular oil changes, and a functioning Eolys additive system represent the best purchases.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Tailgate wiring harness routing (May 2004 - July 2006, three-door models) Verify completed
ABS/ESP hydraulic unit - wheel locking during emergency braking (June 2005 - September 2006) Critical - verify completed
Starter motor supply terminal positioning - short circuit risk (2006-2010) Verify completed
Front airbag igniters may not deploy correctly (Takata, September 2009 onwards) Critical - verify completed
Contact a Citroën dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The ABS/ESP hydraulic unit recall is safety-critical and affects 2005-2006 production cars. The Takata airbag recall is an ongoing global campaign affecting many manufacturers.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Mk1 C4s
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on all models
All first-generation C4 models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty and 12-year rust perforation warranty. Third-party used car warranties are available but often exclude turbochargers, DPFs, and injection systems on high-mileage diesel cars. A thorough pre-purchase inspection is more valuable than warranty coverage at this age.

Citroën C4 1.6 BlueHDi Mk2
Citroën C4 1.6 BlueHDi Mk2 2014-2018
Successor generation with smaller DV6 diesel. Adds AdBlue system complexity and its own injector-to-turbo failure chain. The Mk1 2.0 HDi is the more robust engine.
Volkswagen Golf Mk5 2.0 TDI
Volkswagen Golf Mk5 2.0 TDI 2003-2008
Similar overall reliability. Golf has porous cylinder head risk on early cars and front wing corrosion. More refined but higher purchase price.
Ford Focus Mk2 2.0 TDCi
Ford Focus Mk2 2.0 TDCi 2004-2011
Same PSA DW10 engine family, very similar reliability. Ford has simpler electrics but its own DMF and DPF weak points.
Peugeot 308 2.0 HDi T7
Peugeot 308 2.0 HDi T7 2007-2013
Same DW10BTED4 engine, identical mechanical risks. Peugeot has better build quality but similar turbo vane and DPF issues.
Citroën C4 1.6 HDi Mk1
Citroën C4 1.6 HDi Mk1 2004-2010
Same car, smaller DV6 engine. The 1.6 has a notorious turbo oil feed pipe blockage problem that the 2.0 does not share. Higher risk overall.
