Citroën C1 1.0 Mk1

The electric power steering system on the C1 Mk1 is a known weak point, particularly on cars between 40,000 and 80,000 km. The EPS ECU develops internal faults, often caused by failing relay contacts or corroded connectors, resulting in intermittent or complete loss of power assistance. The steering becomes noticeably heavy at low speeds. A dashboard warning light typically illuminates. Specialist ECU repair services cost around €150-250, which saves significantly over a full column replacement at €400-500 fitted. The issue affects all three triplet cars (C1, 107, Aygo) equally. Cars that have already had the ECU repaired or replaced with an updated unit are less likely to have a recurrence.

The SensoDrive (also called MMT on the Toyota-badged version) is an automated manual gearbox that uses an electronic actuator to operate the clutch and select gears. This actuator is prone to premature wear, typically between 40,000 and 80,000 km, though earlier failures are not uncommon. Symptoms include jerky gear changes, failure to engage gears, sudden shifts to neutral while driving, and a flashing N warning light. A new clutch actuator costs around €480 plus labour and coding, while a gear actuator runs to €780. Specialist remanufactured units are available for less but quality varies. This issue ONLY affects cars with the SensoDrive automated gearbox. Manual 5-speed cars are not affected.

The water pump on the 1KR-FE engine is a known weak point, particularly on pre-2009 facelift cars which had a weaker pump design. The pump seal degrades and begins to weep coolant, typically between 90,000 and 130,000 km. If not caught early, coolant loss can lead to overheating and engine damage. The pump design was improved around 2007-2009, but even revised pumps can fail at higher mileages. The water pump part costs around €30-50 and is relatively accessible on this engine, with total replacement cost of €200-400 depending on the garage. Always check coolant level and look for stains around the pump area during inspection.

The C1's exhaust system is known to corrode faster than average, particularly on cars used for short trips or driven in areas with road salt. The rear silencer typically fails first, producing a growling or rattling noise. In some cases, corrosion through the mounting brackets can cause the exhaust to drop onto the rear axle. A replacement rear silencer costs around €80-150 for aftermarket parts plus €100-200 for fitting. If the entire exhaust from the catalytic converter back needs replacing, expect €300-500. This is a common inspection failure point. Cars from northern European countries with heavy salt use are most affected.

The 1KR-FE engine is known to develop increased oil consumption at high mileages, typically above 120,000 km. The cause is usually worn piston rings and valve stem seals. Toyota considers up to 1 litre per 1,600 km as acceptable, though most well-maintained engines consume far less. For most owners, the practical solution is simply topping up oil between services at a cost of €50-100 per year. If consumption becomes excessive (1 litre per 1,000 km or less), an engine internal repair involving new rings, pistons, and valve stem seals costs €1,200-1,500, but this is rarely needed on engines that received regular oil changes.

The lambda (oxygen) sensors typically degrade between 90,000 and 140,000 km. Symptoms include the check engine light, increased fuel consumption of up to 15%, and rough idling. The part costs around €30-60 for aftermarket or €70-100 for OEM, with labour of approximately €50-80. There are two sensors (pre-cat and post-cat) and either can fail. This is a straightforward repair that most independent garages can handle quickly.

The original C1 clutch uses a small 180mm disc that wears faster than expected in heavy city traffic. The clutch cable can also stretch or break over time. A common symptom is the clutch bite point moving progressively higher. Toyota developed an upgraded 190mm clutch kit (from the Yaris) which significantly extends clutch life. If replacing the clutch, always request the 190mm upgrade. Replacement costs €350-700 at an independent garage depending on whether the flywheel also needs machining or replacement. Clutch release bearing squeak is also common and indicates wear.
