Citroën C5 Aircross 1.5 BlueHDi Mk1

The DV5 1.5 BlueHDi engine produced between October 2017 and January 2023 was fitted with a 7mm camshaft chain that is prone to premature wear from oil carbonisation and contact stress. When the chain stretches beyond tolerance, it can skip or snap entirely, causing piston-to-valve contact and catastrophic engine failure. Common warning signs include a rattle on cold start lasting several seconds. Stellantis has issued a recall (code NY5, affecting 85,912 C5 Aircross units) and extended the warranty to 10 years / 150,000 km covering 100% of parts and labor, provided the car has been serviced according to manufacturer recommendations. The preventive upgrade to the stronger 8mm chain system (including new camshafts and carrier) costs approximately €800-1,500 at an independent specialist. If the chain has already caused engine damage, repair costs range from €3,000-5,000 for a rebuilt engine. Cars produced from late 2023 onward have the 8mm chain from factory. Always verify recall status and chain type before purchase.

The selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system relies on an AdBlue injector and pump that are prone to crystallisation and blockage. White crystals build up inside the injector first, then appear externally. The AdBlue pump, housed inside the reservoir, can also fail outright. Symptoms include dashboard error messages about exhaust emissions, reduced engine performance, and in some cases a countdown warning limiting starts. Typical onset is between 80,000-120,000 km. The 1.5 BlueHDi has its DPF integrated vertically at the front of the engine with a relatively compact design that needs to regenerate more frequently than older, larger DPF units. When the car is primarily driven on short trips without reaching sustained highway speed, the automatic regeneration cycle cannot complete, and soot accumulates until the filter is fully blocked. Symptoms include a DPF warning light, reduced engine power, and rough running. A forced regeneration at a workshop costs €100-200, professional DPF cleaning €200-300, and a full DPF replacement €900-1,500. Weekly highway drives of 20-30 minutes at steady speed help prevent this issue. Using low-ash engine oil (ACEA C2) is also important.

The 8-speed Aisin EAT8 automatic fitted to many C5 Aircross models can develop harsh shifts, particularly between 1st and 2nd gear, and hesitation when pulling away from rest. Problems typically emerge between 40,000-60,000 km and are often caused by degraded transmission fluid or outdated software. Despite Stellantis describing the fluid as lifetime fill, specialists recommend changing the ATF every 60,000 km using the specified ultra-low viscosity AW-2 fluid. A transmission fluid change costs €300-600 at a specialist. Software updates (free at dealer) resolve many cases. If the issue progresses to valve body wear, repair costs €800-1,500; full mechatronics replacement runs €1,500-2,500. Manual gearbox variants do not have this issue.

The NAC infotainment system can exhibit various glitches including screen freezing, spontaneous rebooting (sometimes accompanied by a thumping sound from the speakers), Bluetooth disconnection, and sat-nav failures. These issues are commonly caused by flash memory degradation in the head unit or outdated software. A firmware update often resolves the problem and costs €60-150 at a dealer for the diagnostic session. If the hardware module itself has failed, replacement costs €400-800. Holding the power button for 10 seconds can force a system restart as a temporary fix.
