The 981 Boxster GTS sits at the top of the standard Boxster range, using a tuned version of the 3.4L flat-six producing 330 hp. It is the last naturally aspirated Boxster GTS, and came standard with Sport Chrono, PASM, sport exhaust, and sport seats. Available with a 6-speed manual or 7-speed PDK, the GTS is mechanically identical to the Boxster S apart from the power increase, 20-inch wheels, and additional standard equipment. Build quality is high, specialist knowledge is widespread, and the 981 platform is widely regarded as one of the most reliable modern Porsche generations.· more· less

Common Problems
Reliable for a sports car, but age-related items add up
The 981 Boxster GTS is widely regarded as one of the most reliable modern Porsche platforms. The 3.4L flat-six is fundamentally robust with no IMS bearing concern, and many examples exceed 150,000 km without major powertrain issues. The main ownership risks are age-related rather than design flaws: AC condensers corrode, door panels delaminate, headlight lenses haze, and ignition coils crack. The low-probability but high-cost bore scoring risk on the 3.4L DFI engine is worth monitoring via periodic oil analysis. The GTS standard PSE adds exhaust actuator maintenance, and PADM-equipped cars have the sensor failure risk. Independent Porsche specialists can significantly reduce repair costs compared to dealer pricing.

Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Rear axle carrier side section manufacturing defect (recall AMB7, Sep 2012-Feb 2013 and Jan-Jul 2014 production) Critical - verify completed
Tank leakage diagnosis module and carbon canister air filter (2013-2016 models) Verify completed
Airbag control unit software update (2015-2016 models) Verify if applicable
Takata airbag inflator (affected production years vary by VIN) Verify completed
Check your VIN at recall.porsche.com to verify all recalls and service campaigns have been completed. The rear axle carrier recall (AMB7) is particularly important for early production cars, as unrepaired vehicles pose a safety risk.

Porsche Boxster S 3.4 981
Porsche Boxster S 3.4 981 2012-2016
Same 3.4L engine with 315 hp. Identical reliability profile. Lacks standard Sport Chrono and PSE, so PADM and exhaust valve issues are less common.
Jaguar F-Type V6 S X152
Jaguar F-Type V6 S X152 2013-2020
Supercharged V6 with dramatic exhaust. Higher running costs due to plastic coolant pipe failures and rear subframe corrosion. Less reliable overall.
Audi TT Mk3 2.0 TFSI
Audi TT Mk3 2.0 TFSI 2014-present
Cheaper to buy and run. The 2.0 TFSI is generally reliable but lacks the mid-engine dynamics. Mechatronics issues on S tronic gearbox are the main risk.
Porsche Boxster 987
Porsche Boxster 987 2004-2012
Previous generation. The 987.1 carries IMS bearing and bore scoring risks. The 987.2 eliminated IMS but has a less refined chassis than the 981.
BMW Z4 sDrive28i E89
BMW Z4 sDrive28i E89 2012-2016
More affordable retractable hardtop roadster. The N20 engine has timing chain guide weakness on pre-2015 cars and the hardtop hydraulics can fail.
