The GTS 4.0 is widely regarded as the sweet spot of the 718 range: a detuned GT4 engine in the everyday Cayman body with either a 6-speed manual or 7-speed PDK. The 4.0L naturally aspirated flat-six uses PTWA-coated cylinders, sidestepping bore scoring and IMS bearing concerns of earlier Porsches. It also avoids the turbo wastegate issues that affect the four-cylinder 718s. Production ran from 2020 through October 2025, making this the final combustion mid-engine Porsche.· more· less

Rare but catastrophic engine failures GPF failures costly out of warranty
Buy if: You want a naturally aspirated flat-six sports car with strong long-term reliability and can verify the connecting rod recall status on 2021 models.
Avoid if: You cannot absorb potential four-figure repair bills or plan to use the car exclusively for short urban trips (GPF clogging risk).

Common Problems
Fundamentally robust engine with very low failure rates
The 4.0L flat-six in the GTS is widely considered one of Porsche's most reliable modern engines. It avoids the turbo wastegate issues of the four-cylinder 718s, has no IMS bearing or bore scoring concerns, and uses modern PTWA cylinder coating. The connecting rod and oil pump issues were confined to a small batch of early 2021 production vehicles and have been addressed through recall. For post-recall cars with documented service history, realistic concerns are water pump seals, GPF longevity on short-trip cars, and PADM mounts on Sport Chrono equipped vehicles.

Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Connecting rod quality defect (190 vehicles, 2021 models built Aug 2020 - Jan 2021) Critical - verify completed
Rear spoiler ECU software - spoiler extends too high (2023-2024 GTS 4.0 models) Verify completed
Suspension component torque specification (certain 2021 models) Verify completed
The connecting rod recall is the most critical item for 2021 model year cars. Contact Porsche with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. Use recall.porsche.com for the official lookup.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years, no km limit) Expired on 2020-2023 models; may remain on late 2024-2025 builds
Porsche Approved Warranty extension Available through Porsche dealers, typically 1-2 years additional
GPF / filter coverage Explicitly excluded as wear item by Porsche extended warranty
Most used GTS 4.0 models are now outside their original 2-year Porsche factory warranty. The Porsche Approved Warranty extension is available but explicitly excludes all filters (including GPF) as wear items. Water pump failures within the first 2 years have generally been covered under factory warranty.
