The 987.1 Boxster S with the 3.2-litre M96.26 flat-six is a short-production variant built for the 2005 and 2006 model years only, before Porsche switched to the 3.4-litre M97 in 2007. It produces 280 hp and offers a rewarding mid-engine driving experience. The 3.2 has a significant advantage over the later 3.4: bore scoring risk is very low on this displacement. The IMS bearing is the main concern, though the 987 uses an improved bearing compared to the 986, and late 2005-onward cars received a more robust single-row design with failure rates under 1%.· more· less

Common Problems
Well-understood weak points, mostly preventable with informed buying
The 987.1 Boxster S 3.2 benefits from the lower bore scoring risk of the M96 engine compared to the later 3.4 M97. The IMS bearing is the main concern, but late 2005 and 2006 cars have the improved bearing with very low failure rates. Most other issues (AOS, water pump, coolant system) are age-related wear items that are well-documented and straightforward for a Porsche specialist to address. A pre-purchase inspection by a Porsche specialist, including a bore scope and IMS bearing check, significantly reduces the risk of surprise expenses.
