The 981 GT4 was the first Cayman to receive a 911-derived engine, borrowing the 3.8-litre naturally aspirated flat-six from the 991.1 Carrera S and detuning it slightly to 385 hp. Paired exclusively with a 6-speed manual and fitted with GT3-derived suspension, it was Porsche's clearest signal that the Cayman could be a serious driver's car. Production ran for just two model years (2015-2016), making it a relatively rare and sought-after model. The engine is free from IMS bearing concerns, and the overall platform is well proven across the 981 family.· more· less

Common Problems
Reliable GT car with predictable but costly service needs
The 981 GT4 benefits from the proven 981 platform and a well-established 3.8L flat-six engine. Major mechanical failures are rare, and most issues are related to auxiliary systems (AC condensers, exhaust actuators, blower motors) rather than the powertrain. The main ownership risk comes from track use history, which accelerates clutch, tire, brake, and shock absorber wear. Verify the 3rd gear transmission recall has been completed, check the PIWIS over-rev report, and inspect for signs of track abuse. With proper maintenance and a specialist who knows the platform, the GT4 can deliver reliable high-mileage ownership.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
3rd gear wheel durability (WJ88) - gearbox replacement with reinforced gear wheels (post-September 2015 production) Critical - verify completed
Airbag control unit (AKB4) - defective KEMET capacitor in ACU (July 2015 - April 2016 production) Verify completed
Rear axle carrier side section (AMB7) - manufacturing defect causing potential fracture (applicable to 2014-2015 Cayman production dates) Verify if applicable
Fuel leak risk in crash (2019 campaign) - fuel system reinforcement Verify completed
The 3rd gear recall is the most critical item for the GT4. Contact Porsche directly with the VIN at recall.porsche.com to verify all campaigns have been completed. Not all dealers report recall work to third-party history services, so always verify directly with Porsche.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all GT4s
Porsche Approved Warranty Available through Porsche dealers, approximately €600-1,200/year
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply on 2015-2016 cars until 2027-2028
All 981 GT4s are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Porsche Approved Warranty (extended warranty) is available through dealers and covers mechanical components with no individual claim limit. It requires the car to pass a Porsche inspection and have a complete service history. Given the cost of potential repairs, the extended warranty can be worthwhile, particularly for higher-mileage examples.
