The Boxster S was the performance flagship of the original 986 lineup, using a 3.2-litre version of the M96 flat-six producing 252 hp (260 hp from 2003). It came with a 6-speed manual, larger brakes, and wider tires as standard. The 3.2 shares the M96 engine family with the 996 911, which means IMS bearing risk applies, but the 3.2-litre displacement has significantly lower bore scoring susceptibility than the 3.4 and 3.6-litre variants thanks to its cast pistons with more durable iron-clad plating.· more· less

Common Problems
Requires pre-purchase inspection and proactive maintenance
The 986 Boxster S with the 3.2-litre M96 engine shares the IMS bearing and rear main seal risks common to the entire M96 family. However, bore scoring risk is significantly lower on the 3.2 than on larger M96 variants (3.4, 3.6, 3.8L). The biggest single concern is IMS bearing status: if already upgraded, the risk profile improves substantially. At this age (20+ years), cooling system components, convertible top mechanism, and HVAC foam are near-universal concerns. Well-maintained examples with documented IMS upgrades and cooling system refreshes can be rewarding long-term ownership prospects.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Coolant reservoir cap pressure relief (1997-2001 production) Verify completed
Ignition switch failure (1997-2004 production) Verify completed
Airbag control module (selected 1997-2004 production) Verify with VIN
Use the official Porsche recall lookup tool (recall.porsche.com) with the VIN to verify all campaigns have been completed. Given the age of these cars, also ask the selling dealer or specialist to run a full VIN history check for any outstanding service campaigns.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all 986 Boxster S models
Porsche Approved used car warranty Not available for cars over 15 years old
Third-party warranty Available through specialist providers, typically €800-1,500/year
All 986 Boxster S models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Third-party warranties are available but often exclude pre-existing conditions and may have high deductibles. A thorough pre-purchase inspection is more valuable than a warranty on a car of this age.
