The GTS 4.0 brought the naturally aspirated flat-six back to the 718 Boxster lineup, replacing the turbocharged four-cylinder with a 400 hp version of the 9A2 EVO engine. Widely regarded as the sweet spot of the 718 range, it combines strong performance with the mechanical character that Porsche enthusiasts expect. Production ended in October 2025, making the 982 the last combustion-powered Boxster generation.· more· less

Common Problems
Reliable for a performance car, but PADM and clutch need monitoring
The 9A2 EVO engine is widely regarded as one of Porsche's most robust modern powertrains. It avoids the bore scoring and IMS issues of earlier flat-sixes. The main ownership concerns are the PADM engine mount sensors (a cross-generational Porsche issue, not specific to this engine), premature clutch wear on manual cars used enthusiastically, and the connecting rod recall on early builds. Most high-mileage examples run without major powertrain issues when properly maintained. The convertible-specific concerns (soft-top wear, drain blockages) require periodic attention but are manageable.

Side airbag impact sensor mounting (2018 718 models) Verify if applicable
The connecting rod recall (AMA4) is particularly important for September 2020 to March 2021 builds. Contact Porsche with the VIN at recall.porsche.com to verify all recalls have been completed before purchasing.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years, no km limit) Expired on most used GTS 4.0 models
Porsche Approved Warranty extension Available up to 15 years from first registration
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Active on all GTS 4.0 models (produced from 2020)
Most used 718 GTS 4.0 models are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Porsche Approved Warranty extensions are available through dealers and are worth considering given the PADM and powertrain repair costs. The 12-year rust perforation warranty remains active on all GTS 4.0 models.
