The 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 marked the return of the naturally aspirated flat-six to the mid-engine Boxster. Built on the 982 platform from 2020, it pairs a 400 hp 4.0L six (shared with the GT4) with PDK or 6-speed manual. PTWA bore coating eliminates the bore scoring risk of earlier flat-sixes, but specific weak points and high Porsche labor rates remain.· more· less

NA flat-six with no bore scoring Robust drivetrain, low fault rate
PADM mounts fail expensively Porsche dealer labor very high
Buy if: You want a modern naturally aspirated mid-engine Porsche with proven reliability and can budget for high specialist labor rates.
Avoid if: You are looking at a Sept 2020-Mar 2021 build without the connecting rod recall completed, or cannot absorb a €3,000+ engine mount bill.

Common Problems
Reliable engine, but watch the mounts and recall status
The 4.0L flat-six itself is widely considered one of the most robust modern Porsche engines, free of the bore scoring risks of older flat-sixes. The main ownership concerns are the PADM engine mounts (genuinely expensive when they fail) and verifying the connecting rod recall has been completed on Sept 2020 - Mar 2021 builds. Porsche labor rates remain high regardless of issue.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Connecting rod crack risk (build dates 18 Sept 2020 - 4 March 2021, approx. 190 vehicles) Critical - verify completed
Contact a Porsche dealer with the VIN to verify the connecting rod recall has been completed. This is critical for any early-build GTS 4.0.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on 2020-2023 cars; may apply to 2024 builds
Porsche Approved extended warranty Available; pricing varies (~€2,500-3,500/year)
Original 2-year Porsche warranty has expired on most 718 GTS 4.0 cars by now. Porsche Approved extended warranty is available up to 15 years total vehicle age and is widely recommended given the PADM mount risk.
