The track-focused flagship of the 991 generation, offered as the 991.1 (2013-2016, 3.8L, 475 hp, PDK only) and the 991.2 (2017-2019, 4.0L, 500 hp, PDK or manual). Both use high-revving naturally aspirated flat-sixes derived from Porsche's GT racing program. The 991.1 went through a well-documented engine recall campaign and received a 10-year extended warranty, while the 991.2 with its 4.0L engine is widely considered more reliable. Despite the early drama, the GT3 scores highly in TUV long-term reliability rankings.· more· less

Common Problems
Complex GT engine needs verification, but fundamentally robust
The 991 GT3 had a rocky start with the 2013-2014 connecting rod recall and subsequent finger follower issue, but Porsche's response was comprehensive: all engines were replaced and warranty was extended to 10 years. The 991.2 with its 4.0L PTWA-coated engine resolved bore scoring and valvetrain concerns. Both generations score exceptionally well in TUV long-term reliability rankings. The main ongoing risks are PDK gearbox replacement (expensive but uncommon), coolant pipe separation on hard-driven cars, and the universal GT-engine valve lash cap issue. A thorough pre-purchase inspection and complete service history are essential.

Finger follower metallurgical defect causing valvetrain wear (991.1 GT3 only) Verify completed
Airbag control unit software (2017-2019 GT3 with full bucket seats) Verify if applicable
Rear spoiler brake light software (2017-2019 GT3 Touring) Verify if applicable
The connecting rod bolt recall is the most critical item on any 991.1 GT3. Contact Porsche directly with the VIN at recall.porsche.com to verify all recall work has been completed. Engine number prefix should be 'G' on replacement engines.

Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all 991 GT3s
Extended engine warranty (991.1 only) 10 years / 190,000 km from first registration
Porsche Approved Warranty Available through Porsche dealers, extendable up to 15 years
The 10-year / 190,000 km extended engine warranty on 991.1 GT3s covers the connecting rod bolt and finger follower defects specifically. This may still be active on late-production 991.1 cars (registered 2016). Check with Porsche using the VIN. For 991.2 cars, the standard 2-year factory warranty has expired, but Porsche Approved Warranty extensions are available through dealers.
