The 981 Boxster is the last naturally aspirated Boxster, widely regarded as one of the most reliable modern Porsche sports cars. The 2.7L MA1 flat-six avoids the IMS bearing and bore scoring concerns that plagued earlier generations. Build quality is high, parts availability is excellent, and a strong specialist network keeps maintenance costs manageable. The convertible top mechanism adds complexity compared to the hardtop Cayman, but the core drivetrain is proven and robust.· more· less

Common Problems
One of the most reliable modern Porsche sports cars
The 981 Boxster 2.7 has an excellent reliability record. The MA1 flat-six engine has no IMS bearing risk and bore scoring is extremely rare on the 2.7. Most issues are cosmetic (door panels, headlights) or related to age-based component wear (AC condensers, seals, convertible mechanism). The PDK transmission is robust with proper fluid maintenance, and the manual gearbox is very dependable. High-mileage examples exceeding 150,000 km with minimal powertrain problems are well documented on owner forums.

Same era, higher price tier. Similar overall reliability but more complex cooling layout. Rear-engine handling is fundamentally different.
Porsche Boxster 987
Porsche Boxster 987 2004-2012
Previous generation. The 987.1 carries IMS bearing risk; the 987.2 eliminated it. Both generations have higher coolant system and bore scoring concerns.
Porsche Boxster 986 2.7
Porsche Boxster 986 2.7 1996-2004
Much cheaper entry point but IMS bearing and bore scoring are genuine threats. The 981 eliminated both of these historic Porsche weak points.
