The Twinamic (Getrag 6DCT250) uses two electric motors (M14 and M15) to operate the dual clutch forks. These motors are susceptible to corrosion, especially in humid or salt-heavy environments. When an actuator motor fails, you lose access to either the odd gears (1st, 3rd, 5th) or even gears (Reverse, 2nd, 4th, 6th). The lower motor (M15, Clutch 2) is a straightforward swap taking roughly 30 minutes. The upper motor (M14, Clutch 1) sits under the intake manifold and requires significant disassembly. At a Smart/Mercedes dealer, the actuator is often only sold as part of the complete transmission assembly, which can push costs to well over €2,000. Clutch pack wear from stop-and-go city driving can compound the issue, with a full clutch kit and labor running €800-1,500. Manual gearbox models are not affected.

The M281 engine's variable valve timing solenoid can become stuck due to carbon deposits and oil sludge, particularly if oil changes are delayed. The check engine light illuminates with code P0016 (camshaft position correlation). In many cases, removing and cleaning the solenoid resolves the issue at minimal cost (€50-80 for a workshop clean).
