The smallest petrol-powered city car sold in Europe during its production run. The W453 was co-developed with Renault, sharing its platform and engine with the Twingo III. The 1.0-litre naturally aspirated three-cylinder (M281) is the simpler and more reliable of the two engine options, avoiding the turbo-related issues that affect the 0.9 variant. Available with either a five-speed manual or the Twinamic six-speed dual-clutch automatic.· more· less

Common Problems
Mechanically simple but the automatic gearbox needs attention
The 1.0-litre naturally aspirated engine is one of the most robust units available in the W453 lineup. Without a turbocharger, the main engine-related concerns are limited to the VVT solenoid and general wear items. The primary risk factor is the Twinamic dual-clutch automatic: if equipped, budget for potential actuator or clutch work. Manual gearbox versions sidestep this entirely. The 12V battery drain is a known quirk rather than a defect. Overall, a well-maintained manual W453 1.0 is among the cheaper and more predictable city cars to own, provided suspension bushings and the exhaust are monitored.
