Honda S2000 AP2

2004-2009Last updated: March 2026

2004-2009 · 2.0 F20C VTEC (240 hp) 4-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol

One of Honda's greatest sports cars and widely considered among the most reliable roadsters ever built. The F20C engine revs to nearly 9,000 rpm, uses a timing chain rather than a belt, and can comfortably exceed 300,000 km with proper care. The AP2 generation improved on the AP1 with revised suspension geometry, a stiffer chassis, and updated styling. European models retained the 2.0-litre F20C engine rather than the 2.2-litre F22C used in North America.

Mazda MX-5 NC 2.0 2005-2015 Direct rival roadster. More common and cheaper to buy, but less powerful. Similar soft top and wheel bearing concerns. Toyota GT86 2012-2021 Newer lightweight sports car with similar driving philosophy. More practical as a coupe but valve spring recall and oil consumption are concerns. Honda Civic Type R FK8 2017-2021 Modern Honda performance icon. Turbocharged K20C1 is very reliable. Higher running costs from 20-inch tires but similar Honda build quality. Honda CR-Z 1.5 Hybrid 2010-2016 Spiritual successor to the S2000 ethos of lightweight fun. Far less powerful but extremely reliable and cheap to run. Porsche Boxster 987 2004-2012 More powerful mid-engine rival. IMS bearing and bore scoring risks push running costs significantly higher than the S2000.
Known Issues most common first
Timing chain tensioner (TCT) wear €800 - 1,800
Tensioner loses oil pressure overnight, causing cold or warm start rattle · more· less
The OEM timing chain tensioner uses a worm gear mechanism that can wear smooth over time, allowing oil pressure to bleed off. This produces a distinctive rattle or raspy noise at startup, sometimes lasting a few seconds, sometimes longer. On AP2 models this is less common than on early AP1 cars, but it does still occur, typically after 120,000-180,000 km. The Honda OEM tensioner replacement part costs approximately €150-200, with labor adding €500-800 depending on the shop. Upgraded aftermarket tensioners (Billman, Spitfire) cost €200-250 and address the root cause with improved surface friction. If ignored, the chain can skip a tooth, causing valve-to-piston contact and catastrophic engine damage.
Soft top tear near crossbar €400 - 1,500
Fabric wears thin and tears where frame arm contacts the top when folded · more· less
The convertible top develops thin spots and tears where the folding frame arms rub against the fabric, particularly on the passenger side rear. Honda issued a service bulletin acknowledging this issue. There are typically four weak spots — two on each side of the car. Professional patching costs €100-400 depending on severity, while a complete soft top replacement runs €1,000-1,500 including labor at a convertible specialist. Preventive measures include fitting protective tape or fabric sleeves around the frame elbow joints. Nearly every S2000 with 80,000+ km will show some wear in these areas.
Rear wheel bearing wear €300 - 600
Solid rear brake discs transfer heat to bearings, accelerating wear · more· less
The S2000 uses solid (non-vented) rear brake discs, which transfer more heat to the hub and wheel bearing than vented designs. This causes accelerated bearing wear, typically noticeable as a humming or grinding noise at highway speeds between 80,000-130,000 km. The rear hub assembly and bearing combined cost approximately €150-200 per side, with labor around €150-200 per side due to the need for a press. Some owners replace both sides preventively when one fails. Replacing just the bearing without the hub can lead to repeat failure, so replacing the complete hub assembly is recommended.
Gear pop-out (2nd, 4th, or 6th gear) €500 - 3,000
Transmission pops out of gear during deceleration, mainly on early AP2 models · more· less
Honda issued TSB 05-009 acknowledging that 2004-mid 2005 AP2 models can pop out of 2nd gear under deceleration due to gear and synchro tolerances being out of spec. The 2nd and 4th gear countershaft assembly and synchros were replaced under warranty on affected VINs. For out-of-warranty repairs, a synchro replacement costs approximately €500-1,200, while a full gearbox rebuild can reach €2,000-3,000. Later AP2 models (2006-2009) are much less affected. Changing the transmission fluid to Honda MTF or a quality 75W-80 GL-4 fluid can sometimes improve mild cases.
EPS control module failure €500 - 1,500
Electronic power steering module fails, causing EPS warning light and loss of power assist · more· less
The S2000's electric power steering system can develop faults in the EPS control module or the torque sensor. When this happens, the EPS warning light illuminates and power steering assist is lost — the car remains drivable but steering becomes very heavy at low speeds. Honda has discontinued the EPS module as a new part, making used or specialist-repaired units the only option. Torque sensor replacement costs approximately €400-600 including labor, while a full EPS module repair service costs €500-800. Complete replacement with a used unit runs approximately €800-1,500 including labor. This is a relatively rare failure but expensive when it occurs.
Dashboard bubbling (2006+ models) €300 - 1,200
Dashboard surface bubbles, blisters, or wrinkles due to heat exposure · more· less
Models from 2006 onwards are known to develop bubbling, blistering, or wrinkling on the dashboard surface, particularly on the passenger side. This is a cosmetic issue caused by heat and UV degradation of the dashboard material. While some owners have had dashboards replaced under warranty through persistent dealer negotiations, most used car buyers will need to address this themselves. A replacement dashboard from Honda costs €800-1,200 including installation, while third-party dashboard covers or refinishing can cost €300-500. Not all 2006+ cars are affected, but it is common enough to check for.
Remarkably reliable for a high-revving sports car
The Honda S2000 AP2 is one of the most dependable sports cars ever produced. The F20C engine is virtually indestructible with proper oil maintenance and can exceed 300,000 km without major intervention. The timing chain eliminates belt replacement concerns. Main ownership risks are the soft top fabric wearing through, rear wheel bearing replacement, and on early AP2 models the gear pop-out issue. None of these are catastrophic, and total repair costs over a typical ownership period remain modest compared to European sports car rivals.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
+ 4 more checksShow less
  • Test all gears under deceleration
Engage each gear and decelerate — especially 2nd and 4th. If the lever pops out, synchros are worn (TSB 05-009 on 2004-2005).
  • Check for rust underneath
Inspect rear wheel arches, sill drain holes, boot floor, and jacking points. Honda applied minimal underbody protection. Rear arches are the primary rust trap.
  • Verify VTEC engagement
During test drive, ensure VTEC engages cleanly around 5,800-6,000 rpm. Hesitation or a check engine light suggests VTEC solenoid or screen clogging.
  • Inspect dashboard for bubbling (2006+)
On 2006-2009 models, check the dashboard surface for bubbling, blistering, or wrinkling, especially on the passenger side.
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Brake booster vacuum loss (2006-2007 models built Jan-Nov 2006) Verify completed
Fuel tank bracket potential corrosion (varies by market) Verify with Honda
Contact Honda with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The brake booster recall is particularly important for 2006-2007 models. The S2000 uses Autoliv airbags, not Takata, so the widespread Takata airbag recall does not apply.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years / 100,000 km) Expired on all S2000s
Rust perforation warranty Expired (originally 6 years)
Extended warranty Not typically available for vehicles this age
All Honda S2000 AP2 models are well outside their original factory warranty. No extended warranty programs are available from Honda for vehicles of this age. Third-party warranty providers may offer limited coverage but typically exclude pre-existing conditions and high-mileage components.
