The W220 S-Class was Mercedes' controversial cost-cut flagship, replacing the tank-like W140 with a lighter, more technology-laden sedan. The S320 CDI pairs a 3.2-litre inline-six turbodiesel (OM613 pre-facelift, OM648 from 2003) with the 5G-Tronic automatic, delivering relaxed motorway cruising with diesel economy. Heavy depreciation makes the car very affordable, but the W220's poor reputation for electrical gremlins, AIRMATIC suspension failure, and corrosion from pre-2004 paint and steel quality means running costs can quickly exceed the car's purchase price.· more· less

Common Problems
Affordable luxury with above-average ownership risk
The W220 S-Class earned its reputation as one of Mercedes' least reliable generations. The combination of AIRMATIC suspension wear, diesel fuel system fragility, widespread corrosion on pre-2004 cars, and complex electronics that drain batteries and generate intermittent faults creates a high ownership-risk profile. The OM613 and OM648 inline-six diesel engines themselves are fundamentally strong and can exceed 300,000 km with careful maintenance, but the car around the engine is where costs accumulate. Late facelift models (2003-2005) with complete Mercedes dealer service history, no visible rust, and recently refreshed suspension are the best buys. Budget at least €1,000-2,000 per year beyond regular servicing for unexpected repairs.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Instrument cluster illumination failure (2000-2006 W220) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator (select 2000-2005 W220 models) Critical - verify completed
Steering coupling bolt (select 1999-2002 W220 models) Verify completed
Fuel line connector leak (select 2002-2004 diesel models) Verify completed
Contact a Mercedes-Benz dealer with the vehicle's VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The Takata airbag recall is particularly critical for safety and applies to vehicles produced through 2005.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all W220 models
Rust perforation warranty (30 years) May still apply on latest 2005 models
Extended warranty availability Extremely limited for 20+ year old vehicles
All W220 S320 CDI models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Extended warranty coverage for cars of this age is essentially unavailable from mainstream providers. Independent specialist breakdown cover may offer some protection but typically excludes pre-existing conditions.
