Common Problems
Durable engine, but emissions and oil system need monitoring
The OM642 V6 is one of Mercedes' most produced diesel engines and many examples reach 250,000 km and beyond. The main ownership risks center around the labor-intensive oil cooler seal repair, the AdBlue system components, and the turbo actuator. Cars equipped with optional AIRMATIC air suspension face additional potential costs. Pre-facelift models (2012-2015) use the 7G-Tronic with its known conductor plate weakness, while post-facelift models (2015-2019) have the improved 9G-Tronic. Regular specialist maintenance with correct oils (MB 229.51/229.52 spec) and timely attention to small leaks are essential for long-term reliability.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Water ingress in spare wheel well affecting fuel pump control unit (2012-2020 W166) Verify completed
Electric power steering bolt specification (certain W166 models) Verify if applicable
Euro 6b emissions software update (OM642 diesel models) Verify if applicable
Contact a Mercedes-Benz dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The spare wheel well water ingress recall is particularly important as accumulated water can damage the fuel pump control unit and cause engine stalling.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all W166 models
Extended warranty Available through Mercedes-Benz dealers and third-party providers
Rust perforation warranty (30 years) May still apply on newer W166 models (2015-2019)
All W166 GLE 350d models are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Extended warranty options are available but typically exclude known wear items, emissions components, and may have mileage restrictions. Mercedes offers a 30-year rust perforation warranty which may still apply to later production cars.
