The OM654 has a documented weakness in the valvetrain. Insufficient lubrication at the contact points between rocker arm pads and camshaft lobes leads to premature wear. Symptoms start as a top-end ticking noise that progresses to misfires, rough running, and check-engine codes. Typically appears between 80,000-150,000 km, though some cars show it earlier. Repair requires removing the camshaft housing, replacing all rocker arms, and often the camshaft if scoring is present. Mercedes has issued TSBs but no global recall. Independent specialist repairs run €2,500-4,000; dealer pricing reaches €5,000-6,500. Strict adherence to oil specification (MB 229.71) and intervals helps but does not fully prevent it.

The OM654's emissions system uses two NOx sensors. Both are heat- and condensation-sensitive and known to fail well before 100,000 km. Symptoms include EML, AdBlue warnings, and the dreaded 'engine will not restart in X km' countdown. A single OEM sensor costs €350-500 plus 1-2 hours labor. Many owners replace both at once for €800-1,200. Some dealers attempt cleaning before replacement, but in 90% of cases the sensor must be replaced. Like all modern diesels, the CLA 220d needs regular highway driving to complete passive regeneration of the DPF. Pure short-trip city use leads to incomplete regen cycles, fuel dilution in oil, and eventual DPF blockage. Forced regen at a specialist costs €150-250. DPF cleaning runs €400-700. Full DPF replacement reaches €2,000-2,800 with OEM parts. The car is poorly suited to urban-only commuting; this is a use-case mismatch rather than a defect.

The 8G-DCT (8-speed dual-clutch) shows rough shifting, especially when downshifting and in crawl mode. Software updates from Mercedes have improved behavior, but clutch packs do wear. Typically problems begin between 80,000-130,000 km on cars with mostly stop-and-go use. A mechatronic unit fault costs €1,500-2,500 to repair. Clutch pack replacement is €2,500-3,500. MBUX in the C118 is software-heavy and shows the typical issues: display freezes, sudden reboots while driving, CarPlay and Android Auto dropouts, and the rearview camera failing to display when reverse is engaged. Three US recalls (R/2020/132, R/2020/039, others) addressed software-related camera/display issues. Many problems are fixed with free software updates. If a head unit needs replacement out of warranty, parts and labor reach €1,200-1,500. Always check that all infotainment functions work during a test drive.

On Coupé and Shooting Brake C118 models with the optional power tailgate, the motor or actuator can fail. Reports include the boot refusing to open from button, fob, or manual operation, even after fuse swaps and battery replacement. Repair requires diagnosis and motor/actuator replacement. Independent garages charge €500-800; dealer pricing reaches €1,000-1,200. Always test the power tailgate during a viewing.

The optional Multibeam LED headlights have reported failures of the adaptive light distribution function. Individual LED modules can fail, or the control electronics can develop faults. This is the #1 reported breakdown cause on the C118. Solution is a new AGM battery (€150-250) and a trickle charger (€60-100) for cars used infrequently. Check battery age (sticker on top) — original AGM batteries on early cars are now near end of life.
