2007-2014Last reviewed: May 2026 · How this report is builtMay 2026

2007-2014 · 1.6/1.8L M271/M274 supercharged and turbocharged petrol (156 hp)

The entry-level petrol in the W204 C-Class, one of the most common premium saloons on European roads. Three engine generations share the 156 hp output: the supercharged 1.6L M271 Kompressor (2007-2010), turbocharged 1.8L M271 EVO CGI (2010-2012), and turbocharged 1.6L M274 (2012-2014). All are paired with either a 6-speed manual or the 7G-Tronic automatic. Running costs are lower than the C200 due to the less stressed engine, but platform-level issues like the steering lock and rear subframe affect all W204 models equally.

Timing chain wear on early models Electronic steering lock failures
Buy if: You want an affordable premium saloon with known-quantity reliability and can verify the timing chain condition, steering lock status, and rear subframe.
Avoid if: You cannot confirm the timing chain has been inspected, the car has spent its life on salted roads without subframe checks, or you need a carefree automatic.

Common Problems
Well-documented issues, manageable with pre-purchase inspection
The C180 W204 can comfortably exceed 200,000 km with proper maintenance. The M271 and M274 engines are fundamentally sound at the 156 hp output level, but the timing chain (particularly on pre-2010 Kompressor models) and the electronic steering lock require attention. The 7G-Tronic automatic needs fluid changes despite the factory lifetime-fill claim. The rear subframe should be inspected on any car used in salt-road countries. Most W204 issues are well-understood, parts are widely available, and independent specialist labour costs are reasonable.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Electronic steering lock (ESL) motor failure (various production batches) Verify completed
Power steering high-pressure line leak (June 2009 - February 2010 production) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator replacement (2007-2015 models) Verify completed
Steering column clock spring module (2011-2014 facelift production) Verify completed
Contact a Mercedes-Benz dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The ESL steering lock recall is particularly important, as failure can leave you stranded without warning. Not all W204 production batches were covered by the ESL recall, so verify your specific car.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all W204 models
Rust perforation warranty (30 years) May still apply to 2007+ models. Verify with Mercedes.
Rear subframe goodwill Case-by-case basis for cars with dealer service history
All W204 C180 models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. The 30-year rust perforation warranty may still be applicable for corrosion-from-inside defects such as the rear subframe. Contact Mercedes-Benz with your VIN to check eligibility for any remaining goodwill repairs.

↔ Also consider

Mercedes-Benz C200 W204 2007-2014 Same M271 engine at higher output (184 hp). Identical reliability profile but the C200 stresses the supercharger/turbo harder, making timing chain and boost issues slightly more likely. BMW 320i F30 2012-2019 Direct competitor. Pre-2015 N20 engine has catastrophic timing chain guide failures. Post-2015 B48 is more reliable. Higher purchase price but more modern interior. Audi A4 B8 1.8 TFSI 2008-2016 Pre-2012 EA888 has serious oil consumption. Post-2012 resolved. Avoid the Multitronic CVT. More expensive to buy but fewer platform-level issues. Mercedes-Benz C220 CDI W203 2000-2007 Previous generation. Worse rust protection and interior quality. Robust diesel engine but more electrical problems (SAM module, EIS failures). Volkswagen Passat B7 1.4 TSI 2010-2014 More space for less money. EA111 timing chain tensioner is a known weak point. Lower running costs overall but lacks the Mercedes refinement.
