The M270 timing chain is a known weak point on early production cars (roughly 2013 to mid-2015). Specialists report the chain and tensioner wear faster than the official 150,000 km service interval suggests, with stretch detectable from around 100,000-130,000 km on cars that have done lots of short trips or skipped oil services. Symptoms are a metallic rattle on cold start, rough idle, and stored cam-correlation fault codes. Catching it early means a chain, guides and tensioner job at €1,500-2,000 at an independent specialist; ignoring it can lead to chain skip and bent valves, pushing the bill towards €3,000+. Mercedes updated the chain components for later 2015+ production runs, which appear less affected.

The 7G-DCT (724.0) shares the M270 with the A and B-Class. Forum data suggests problems mainly appear after 100,000-140,000 km, and over 70% of failed gearboxes had never had a transmission oil and filter service, despite Mercedes specifying one every 60,000 km. Common symptoms are jerky pull-away from a stop, hesitation between gears, and a clunk when shifting between P/N/R. A scheduled gearbox oil and filter service costs €300-400 and prevents most issues. A clutch pack replacement runs €1,200-1,800, and a full mechatronics unit replacement can reach €3,000-3,500. Manual cars are far less affected and usually only need a clutch at high mileage.

The plastic thermostat housing on the M270 is known to crack and seep coolant, and the electric water pump can fail or weep around the same age. Diagnostic codes P0128 (coolant temperature below thermostat regulating temperature) and P0597 are commonly reported. Symptoms include coolant warning lights, slow warm-up, weak cabin heat, and visible coolant on the underside of the engine. Combined thermostat plus water pump replacement runs €600-900 at an independent specialist using OEM parts, and €1,200-1,400 at a Mercedes dealer. Many CLAs need this work between 100,000-140,000 km.

The MFA platform suspension is firm and reasonably durable, but front control arm bushes, drop links and rear shock absorbers tend to wear after 100,000-130,000 km. Symptoms include clunks over bumps, vague steering, uneven inner-edge tire wear, and the car pulling to one side. Replacing all four front control arms and drop links at an independent specialist costs €500-800; a pair of rear shocks adds another €300-450. Cars on optional 18-inch wheels and lowered AMG-line suspension wear faster than standard 16-inch cars.

A widely reported nuisance on the C117 (and A/B-Class siblings) is the fuel filler flap actuator failing, leaving the flap locked even when the doors are unlocked. The cause is a small solenoid in the boot trim that seizes or fills with moisture. The part costs €40-80 and is a 30-minute DIY job for a confident owner; dealers typically charge €150-250 to replace. Some cars also suffer from the charcoal canister vent restricting refuelling (pump cuts out after 2 seconds), which is a separate but related issue costing €200-400 to resolve.

The pre-facelift Audio 20 and COMAND units are widely reported to freeze, lose audio output, or fail to read SD cards. A software update at the dealer can resolve some symptoms, but a failed head unit replacement runs €800-1,500 with coding. Other common electrical complaints are parking sensors triggering false warnings, reverse camera dropouts, and the occasional KEYLESS-GO module fault. None of these are catastrophic, but they add up across a 10-year ownership period.
