The CLA C117 brought four-door coupe styling to the Mercedes compact range, sharing the MFA platform with the A-Class W176 and B-Class W246. The CLA 180 is the entry-level petrol variant, powered by the 1.6-litre M270 turbocharged four-cylinder producing 122 hp, paired with either a 7G-DCT dual-clutch automatic or a 6-speed manual. The lower-stressed engine tune is generally easier on the drivetrain than the CLA 200/250, but the same M270 and DCT weak points still apply.· more· less

Buy if: You want a stylish premium compact and can find a manual or a DCT with documented gearbox oil changes every 60,000 km.
Avoid if: You mostly drive stop-and-go in town with the DCT, or the car is a pre-2015 build with no record of timing chain inspection.

Common Problems
Generally solid for a Mercedes compact, but maintenance discipline is essential
The CLA 180 with the lower-stressed 122 hp M270 is one of the more robust C117 variants, especially with manual transmission. The biggest risks - timing chain on early cars and 7G-DCT clutch wear - are mostly preventable with documented oil services and chain inspection. Cars with a complete dealer or specialist service history at 100,000-140,000 km tend to give few surprises. Cars without that paperwork, or pre-2015 DCT cars that have only ever seen short urban trips, are the ones to walk away from.

Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all C117 cars
Mercedes-Benz rust perforation warranty 30 years from first registration (still active)
Extended warranty availability Available through Mercedes-Benz dealers (Junge Sterne / Young Stars programme)
All C117 CLAs are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. The 30-year Mercedes rust perforation warranty still applies, and Mercedes dealers offer paid extended cover (typically 12 months at a time) which can be worth considering on cars with the 7G-DCT automatic.
