2013-2018Last updated: March 2026

2013-2018 · 2.1 OM651 turbodiesel (170-177 hp) 7G-DCT dual-clutch

The quickest diesel in the W176 A-Class range, pairing the proven 2.1-litre OM651 four-cylinder with the 7G-DCT dual-clutch automatic. With 170 hp (177 hp post-facelift), it offers strong motorway performance and 4-5 l/100 km economy. The OM651 is a workhorse engine used across much of the Mercedes range, and many examples exceed 300,000 km. However, the combination of diesel emissions equipment, the 7G-DCT gearbox, and the W176-specific water ingress issue means buyers need to inspect carefully.

Known Issues most common first
7G-DCT dual-clutch gearbox wear €900 - 3,000
Clutch pack and mechatronics wear, worsened by the OM651's higher diesel torque · more· less
The Getrag 7G-DCT (724.0) dual-clutch gearbox is the most common complaint on W176 diesel models. The OM651's 350 Nm of torque puts more stress on the dry clutch packs than the petrol variants. Symptoms include jerking at low speeds, vibrations between 20-40 km/h, and clutch slippage when hot. Problems typically appear between 70,000-120,000 km, especially on cars used predominantly in city traffic. Over 70% of faulty gearboxes reportedly never had an oil change in the first 100,000 km. Mercedes considers the gearbox oil a lifetime fill, but specialists strongly recommend changing it every 60,000 km with MB 236.21 specification fluid. A clutch pack replacement costs approximately €900-1,400 with aftermarket parts, €1,500-2,000 with OEM. Mechatronics repair or replacement runs €1,200-3,000. A TCU software adaptation reset (€100-200) can improve shift quality in early-stage symptoms.
Timing chain and tensioner wear €1,000 - 1,800
Single-row chain stretches, tensioner loses pressure causing cold start rattle · more· less
The OM651 uses a single-row (simplex) timing chain rather than a more durable duplex chain. This was acknowledged by Mercedes when the successor OM654 switched to a duplex design. The chain is located at the rear of the engine, making replacement labor-intensive. Symptoms begin as a distinctive metallic rattle for 1-5 seconds on cold start as the tensioner loses hydraulic pressure overnight. This typically starts between 120,000-180,000 km with proper oil changes, but can occur earlier with neglected maintenance. Mercedes has revised the tensioner multiple times. Parts for the full chain kit cost €200-400, but labor is substantial as the engine may need to be partially lifted. Total replacement cost is €1,000-1,800 at an independent specialist. Ignoring the rattle risks chain skip and catastrophic valve damage.
DPF clogging from short-trip driving €400 - 1,500
Diesel particulate filter fails to regenerate on short urban journeys · more· less
The DPF on the OM651 requires the engine to reach operating temperature and sustain approximately 2,000 rpm at 60+ km/h for regeneration. Cars used primarily for short urban trips will accumulate soot beyond the point where passive regeneration is possible. Once the ECU shows a DPF warning, a forced regeneration via diagnostic equipment costs €100-200. If the DPF is too clogged for forced regeneration, professional off-car cleaning costs €300-500. A complete DPF replacement costs €1,000-1,500. The differential pressure sensor can also fail, preventing regeneration even on highway-driven cars. Sensor replacement costs €150-250. Regular motorway driving of at least 30 minutes per week significantly reduces the risk.
Fuel filter housing coolant leak €250 - 500
Coolant seeps from the fuel filter housing where it bolts to the cylinder head · more· less
The OM651 fuel filter housing has coolant passages running through it and bolts to both the cylinder head and inlet manifold. Under boost pressure, the inlet manifold flexes, stressing the housing seals. This causes a slow coolant leak that can be difficult to pinpoint as it often drips internally rather than pooling visibly. Symptoms include gradually dropping coolant level with no obvious external leak, and sometimes a sweet smell from the engine bay. Mercedes released an updated housing design. The replacement part costs €80-150, but the repair requires removing the EGR cooler and replacing its gasket as well, bringing total repair to €250-500 at an independent shop.
NOx sensor failure €400 - 800
Upstream NOx sensor fails from condensation and corrosion, triggering AdBlue warnings · more· less
Euro 6 variants of the A220 CDI/A220d use an AdBlue (SCR) system with NOx sensors to monitor emissions. The upstream NOx sensor is prone to failure from water ingress and corrosion caused by condensation in the exhaust. Symptoms include AdBlue warning messages, engine management light, and eventually a countdown to a no-start condition. An OEM sensor costs €300-500, with labor of €100-200 for replacement. Mercedes addressed this with a revised sensor design that includes a drain hole. Some dealers replace under goodwill on cars less than 5 years old, but most W176 models are now outside this window. If ignored, the car will eventually refuse to start after the AdBlue countdown expires.
EGR valve and cooler issues €350 - 800
Carbon-clogged EGR valve causes rough idle and power loss; cooler can leak coolant internally · more· less
The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system on the OM651 recirculates exhaust gases to reduce NOx emissions. The EGR valve accumulates carbon deposits over time, particularly on cars driven gently or on short trips. Symptoms include rough idle, hesitation during acceleration, and reduced power. Cleaning the valve costs €150-250. If the valve motor has failed, replacement costs €300-500. The EGR cooler can also develop internal leaks, allowing coolant into the intake tract, which causes white smoke on cold starts and coolant loss. EGR cooler replacement costs €400-800 including labor. Mercedes released an updated cooler design to address the issue.
Water ingress through rear air vents €100 - 600
Failed seals on rear bumper air vents allow rainwater into boot and rear footwells · more· less
This is a well-documented design flaw affecting all W176 A-Class models. The rubber seals on air pressure vents behind the rear bumper degrade, allowing rainwater to enter the boot and rear footwells. Condensation inside the rear lamp is an early visible indicator. If left unaddressed, water damage can affect wiring looms and electronic modules under the rear seats. Mercedes acknowledged this and repaired many under goodwill, but most W176s are now outside any warranty. The DIY fix costs under €50 for new vent covers and sealant. Professional resealing costs €100-200. If water has already damaged electronics, repair costs can reach €400-600.
Diesel injector failure (early piezo models) €800 - 2,000
Early Delphi piezo injectors prone to erratic fueling; later solenoid injectors more reliable · more· less
The earliest OM651 engines used Delphi piezo injectors that were sensitive to fuel quality and prone to erratic fuel delivery. Mercedes issued a service campaign to replace these with updated solenoid-type injectors on affected vehicles. Most A220 CDI models from 2013 onwards should already have been updated, as Mercedes proactively replaced injectors during routine servicing. If a car still has original piezo injectors, symptoms include rough running, poor starting, and increased fuel consumption. A single injector costs €200-350 for a remanufactured unit, with programming required via Star diagnostic. Replacing all four injectors costs €800-2,000 depending on whether remanufactured or new units are used. Check whether the injector service campaign was completed before purchasing.
Proven diesel engine, but emissions equipment and gearbox need attention
The OM651 2.1 diesel is one of Mercedes' most durable modern engines, with many examples exceeding 300,000 km. However, ownership costs are driven by the diesel emissions equipment (DPF, EGR, NOx sensors, AdBlue) and the 7G-DCT dual-clutch gearbox, which suffers more under the engine's higher torque output. Cars driven primarily on motorways with regular gearbox oil changes fare significantly better. The W176 water ingress issue affects all variants and should be checked on every car. Short oil change intervals (10,000-15,000 km rather than the factory 25,000 km) and gearbox oil changes every 60,000 km are the most effective preventive measures.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
+ 4 more checksShow less
  • Check coolant level and condition
Low coolant without visible external leak suggests fuel filter housing or EGR cooler leak. Check the coolant expansion tank level and look for signs of topping up.
  • Verify AdBlue system status (Euro 6 models)
Check for any AdBlue warning messages on the dashboard. Ask about NOx sensor replacement history. Check the AdBlue fill level.
  • Confirm injector service campaign completed
Ask whether the early piezo injector replacement campaign was done. Mercedes dealers can confirm via VIN. Cars with later solenoid injectors are less prone to failure.
  • Check DPF status with diagnostic tool
If possible, read the DPF soot loading percentage via OBD2. A well-maintained car driven on motorways should show low soot levels. High levels suggest short-trip use.
