2011-2018 · 1.6 M270 turbocharged petrol (156 hp)

The W246 B-Class is Mercedes-Benz's compact MPV, sharing its platform and M270 1.6 turbo engine with the A-Class W176 and CLA C117. The B200 produces 156 hp and offers more interior space and a higher seating position than its A-Class sibling, making it popular with families and older buyers. Available with a 7G-DCT dual-clutch automatic or a 6-speed manual gearbox.

Buy if: You want a practical, spacious Mercedes compact and can find one with a manual gearbox or a 7G-DCT with documented gearbox oil changes.
Avoid if: You need an automatic for heavy city traffic without confirmed DCT oil changes, or cannot verify cold-start behaviour for timing chain assessment.

Common Problems
Moderate reliability with well-known weak points that respond to maintenance
The M270 1.6 petrol engine in the B200 is generally solid when properly maintained, with many examples exceeding 200,000 km without major powertrain issues. The main ownership concerns are the 7G-DCT gearbox (particularly on cars with neglected oil changes), the timing chain on early 2011-2014 models, and the thermostat housing. Manual gearbox variants are significantly more reliable. Shorter oil change intervals (every 10,000-15,000 km rather than the factory 25,000 km) dramatically improve long-term engine reliability. Unlike the A-Class W176, the B-Class W246 does not suffer from the rear bumper water ingress issue.
