Common Problems
First-generation EV platform with significant software growing pains
The EQS SUV 580 drivetrain is mechanically robust, with the dual motors and 118 kWh battery showing no pattern of major powertrain failures. However, the software ecosystem is where most problems concentrate: MBUX crashes, phantom braking, battery management warnings, OTA update failures, and rear-axle steering calibration glitches. Mercedes has issued multiple recalls addressing the most critical issues, and cars built from mid-2024 onward benefit from improved software. The main financial risks come from AIRMATIC air suspension (expensive as the car ages), Digital Light headlights (rare but very costly), and accelerated tire wear from the vehicle's 2,845 kg kerb weight. The 10-year/250,000 km battery warranty provides strong long-term protection for the most expensive component.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Battery management system software overload (2023-2025 production, 14,912 vehicles) Critical - verify completed
Electric drivetrain software loss of propulsion (2022-2023, 8,281 vehicles) Critical - verify completed
AVAS pedestrian warning sound incorrect while reversing (2022-2025) Verify completed
80-Amp fuse manufacturing defect (2023-2024) Verify completed
MBUX system accessibility while driving (2022, 227 vehicles) Verify completed
ESP monitoring software fault (2022) Verify completed
The EQS SUV has accumulated multiple safety recalls in its first years of production. The battery management system recall (2024) is particularly important and cannot be done via OTA update. Contact Mercedes-Benz with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed before purchase.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years, no km limit) Expired on 2022-2023 models, may remain on 2024+
High-voltage battery warranty 10 years / 250,000 km (70% capacity guarantee)
Rust perforation warranty 30 years (Mercedes standard)
Extended warranty availability Available through Mercedes dealers
The 10-year/250,000 km battery warranty is excellent and covers capacity degradation below 70%. For 2022-2023 models, the 2-year basic factory warranty has likely expired. Extended warranty is strongly recommended given the complex electronics, AIRMATIC suspension, rear-axle steering, and Digital Light headlights. Some high-cost repairs (AIRMATIC, Digital Light, MBUX hardware) can exceed €5,000 individually.
