The W164 was Mercedes-Benz's second-generation M-Class and a significant step up in refinement from the W163 predecessor. The ML 320 CDI pairs the proven OM642 3.0L V6 turbodiesel with permanent 4MATIC all-wheel drive and the 7G-Tronic automatic, delivering comfortable motorway cruising, capable towing, and competitive diesel economy for its size. Widely available on the used market at accessible prices, though parts and labor costs reflect its Mercedes-Benz luxury SUV status.· more· less

Common Problems
Capable engine, but age and complexity drive repair costs
The OM642 V6 diesel is fundamentally a durable engine, with many examples exceeding 300,000 km. However, the oil cooler seals on pre-2010 engines use inferior materials and will almost certainly need attention at some point. Models equipped with AIRMATIC air suspension face additional expensive repairs as components age past 15 years. The 7G-Tronic transmission is generally reliable but the conductor plate is a known weak point. Finding a well-maintained example with documented service history, verifying the brake booster recall, and carefully checking the AIRMATIC system are the keys to a trouble-free purchase.
