The W220 brought the S-Class into the modern era with AIRMATIC air suspension, Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC), and soft-close doors. The S350 arrived with the 2002 facelift, pairing the robust M112 3.7L V6 with the 5G-Tronic 5-speed automatic (722.6). With 245 hp and 350 Nm, it offers adequate but not exciting performance. The W220 generation is widely known for below-average build quality by S-Class standards, but the post-facelift S350 benefits from improved interior materials and more reliable AIRMATIC components compared to pre-2003 models.· more· less

Common Problems
High complexity, affordable to buy but expensive to maintain
The W220 S350 combines a genuinely reliable M112 V6 engine with some of the most failure-prone ancillary systems of any S-Class generation. The AIRMATIC suspension, SBC brakes, PSE vacuum system, and dense electrical architecture all require specialist attention as they age. Running costs will significantly exceed the car's purchase price over time. The post-2003 facelift models are better than earlier W220s, but at 20+ years old, every system is a candidate for failure. Budget generously for maintenance and find a trusted Mercedes specialist before buying.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Instrument cluster illumination failure (2000-2005 S-Class) Verify completed
Front brake hose rupture risk (2003-2004 S-Class) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator replacement (2000-2005) Critical - verify completed
SBC brake system ground wire loosening (2003-2005 models with SBC) Verify completed
Contact Mercedes-Benz with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The Takata airbag recall is particularly important as unresolved units pose a serious safety risk. SBC brake recalls should also be verified even if the car has been serviced regularly.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all W220 S350 models
SBC brake warranty (25 years, US only) Not applicable in Europe
Rust perforation warranty (30 years) May still apply on 2003+ models until 2033-2035
All W220 S350 models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. The 25-year SBC brake warranty extension was granted in the US but does not apply in Europe. The 30-year rust perforation warranty may still cover through-rust on the youngest examples (2005 build). Contact Mercedes-Benz with the VIN for specific warranty status.
