The W211 E-Class was Mercedes' executive sedan from 2002 to 2009, and the E280 CDI arrived with the 2005 facelift bringing the OM642 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel. With 190 hp and 440 Nm of torque, it delivers effortless motorway cruising and strong real-world economy around 7-8 L/100 km. The OM642 is a proven engine used across the Mercedes range and capable of exceeding 400,000 km with proper maintenance, but it carries several well-documented weak points that need monitoring.· more· less

Buy if: You want a comfortable long-distance diesel cruiser and can find a facelift (2006+) model with full service history and no signs of oil cooler leaks.
Avoid if: You mostly drive short urban trips (DPF clogging risk) or are looking at a pre-facelift model with AIRMATIC suspension and unknown service history.

Common Problems
Robust engine, but oil cooler and emissions components need monitoring
The OM642 V6 is fundamentally a strong and durable engine, with well-maintained examples regularly exceeding 300,000 km. However, the oil cooler seal is a near-certainty for repair if not already addressed, and the emissions system (DPF, EGR, swirl flaps) requires the car to be driven regularly on longer trips. The facelift models (2006-2009) eliminated the troublesome SBC brake system, which is a significant advantage. Cars with standard suspension are meaningfully cheaper to maintain than AIRMATIC-equipped variants. A complete service history and evidence of oil cooler seal work are the two most important things to verify before purchase.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
SBC hydraulic brake unit reprogramming (pre-facelift models, 2003-2005) Verify if applicable
Front axle carrier bolt corrosion (2003-2006 production) Verify completed
Rear SAM module replacement (various production dates) Verify completed
Turbo linkage check and lubrication (OM642 models) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator (various production dates) Verify completed
Contact a Mercedes-Benz dealer with the VIN to verify all applicable recalls and service campaigns have been completed. The SBC brake recall is only relevant for pre-facelift (2003-2005) cars; facelift E280 CDI models (2006+) use conventional brakes.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all W211 models
SBC brake extended warranty (25 years) May still apply to pre-facelift models, verify with dealer
Rust perforation warranty (30 years) May still apply on later production cars (2007-2009)
All W211 E280 CDI models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. The notable exception is the SBC brake system, which received a 25-year extended warranty from Mercedes-Benz. If your car has AIRMATIC suspension, note that air springs are considered wear items and were never covered beyond the standard warranty period.
