The second-generation Mazda 6 brought the 2.2 MZR-CD diesel to Europe in 2008, offered in 125, 163, and 185 hp versions with a single variable-geometry IHI turbo and 6-speed manual or automatic. It was a well-regarded mid-size car with sharp handling for its class, but the diesel drivetrain demands attentive ownership. The critical issue on these engines is the injector seal and oil strainer chain of failure, which can lead to complete engine loss if neglected.· more· less

Strong torque, efficient on motorway Good handling for its segment
Oil strainer blockage risk Subframe corrosion in salt regions
Buy if: You drive mostly motorway kilometres, are prepared to monitor oil level and condition between services, and can verify the injector seals have been replaced on schedule.
Avoid if: You primarily make short urban trips (DPF will suffer), or the car has spent its life in heavy road-salt regions without documented subframe inspection.

Common Problems
Reliable if maintained properly, but demands attentive diesel ownership
The 2.2 MZR-CD is a competent engine when kept on top of its specific maintenance needs, but it punishes neglect more severely than most competitors. The injector seal and oil strainer failure chain is the most critical concern and is entirely preventable with regular seal replacement. DPF oil dilution is manageable with motorway driving but creates cascading problems on short-trip cars. EGR carbon buildup is inevitable and should be budgeted as periodic maintenance. Cars with complete service history, regular motorway use, and documented injector seal replacements are significantly more dependable than urban-only examples with patchy records.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Takata airbag inflator (passenger side, 2007-2010 production) Critical - verify completed
Front subframe insufficient corrosion protection (2008-2010 production, expanded to 2011-2013) Verify if applicable
Dashboard crash pad sticky surface (2008-2012 production, 10-year extended warranty) Verify if applicable
The Takata airbag recall is critical and must be verified as completed before purchase. The front subframe corrosion recall was primarily issued in North America but affected the same production, so European-market cars should be inspected regardless. Contact a Mazda dealer with the VIN to verify all recall status.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years / 100,000 km) Expired on all Mazda 6 GH models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on all but latest 2012 models
Dashboard warranty extension (10 years) Expired on all models (2008-2012 production)
All Mazda 6 GH models are well outside their original 3-year / 100,000 km factory warranty. The 12-year rust perforation warranty has also expired for most models. Any goodwill claims for known defects (such as the oil strainer issue) depend entirely on individual dealer discretion.

Mazda 6 2.2 Skyactiv-D GJ 2012-2020
Successor with twin-turbo Skyactiv-D engine. More power and efficiency, but adds head gasket risk not present on the MZR-CD. Similar DPF and EGR concerns.
BMW 520d F10
BMW 520d F10 2010-2017
More refined with stronger resale. N47/B47 diesels have their own timing chain concerns. Higher parts and labour costs across the board.
Audi A4 B8 2.0 TDI
Audi A4 B8 2.0 TDI 2008-2015
Well-proven EA188/EA288 diesel with fewer catastrophic engine risks. Oil consumption and mechatronics issues on the automatic are the main concerns.
Mercedes-Benz C220d W205
Mercedes-Benz C220d W205 2014-2021
Newer and more premium. OM651 diesel is generally robust but injector and EGR issues appear at similar mileages. Significantly higher purchase price.
