The second-generation Mazda 6 with the 2.0 MZR-CD diesel was a handsome mid-size alternative to the Mondeo and Passat, offered as sedan, hatchback, and estate. The RF7J engine provides 140 hp and adequate torque for relaxed motorway cruising, but it gained a reputation for problematic DPF management and injector seal failures that contaminate engine oil. Mazda replaced this engine with the 2.2 MZR-CD during the GH's production run, effectively acknowledging its shortcomings. Available with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic, both conventional torque converter units.· more· less

Buy if: You drive regular motorway distances of 15,000+ km/year, can find one with full service history showing frequent oil changes, and are comfortable monitoring oil levels closely.
Avoid if: You drive mostly short urban trips under 10 km, or you want a diesel you can simply service once a year without extra attention.

Common Problems
Requires attentive ownership and frequent oil monitoring
The 2.0 MZR-CD is the weaker of the two diesel engines offered in the GH generation. The injector seal and oil strainer issue is a known design weakness that was not fully resolved until Mazda moved to the Skyactiv diesel platform. Cars that have received the revised injector seals and are driven regularly on motorway journeys can reach high mileage, but those used primarily on short trips with infrequent oil changes are at serious risk of expensive failures. Oil level and condition should be checked every 1,000 km at minimum. If buying, confirm the injector seals have been replaced with the revised tinned copper type, check the oil for signs of fuel dilution, and prioritize cars with documented motorway use history.
