Common Problems
One of the most reliable compacts in its class
The 1.5 Skyactiv-G BM Mazda 3 has a strong reliability record. The naturally aspirated engine uses a timing chain (no scheduled replacement), has no turbocharger to fail, and avoids the complex dual-clutch gearboxes that trouble some competitors. Known weak points are minor: carbon buildup from direct injection, spark plug and ignition coil wear from the high compression ratio, and rear spring corrosion in salt-road regions. None of these are catastrophic or particularly expensive to address.
