Like all Skyactiv-G engines, the 1.5 uses direct injection, which means fuel is sprayed directly into the combustion chamber rather than over the intake valves. Without fuel washing over them, carbon deposits from PCV vapors and EGR gases gradually build up on the valve backs. Symptoms include rough idle, slight hesitation, and reduced power, typically appearing after 100,000-150,000 km. Mazda's high 14:1 compression ratio helps burn deposits more effectively than some competitors, so the issue is less severe than on many other GDI engines. The 1.5 Skyactiv-G's high compression ratio (up to 14:1) puts greater stress on spark plugs and ignition coils compared to lower-compression engines. Spark plugs may need replacement earlier than the typical 60,000 km interval, and ignition coil failures are reported more frequently than on the 2.0 variant. Symptoms include misfires, rough idling, and a check engine light. Individual coil replacement costs around €50-80 per coil plus labor. The rear coil springs on the BM Mazda 3 have a plastic coating that wears at the contact point with the metal spring seat. Water enters through the worn area and is trapped between the coating and the spring, causing accelerated corrosion. The right rear spring is most commonly affected, with the bottom coil fracturing. Ignoring a worn tensioner can lead to belt damage and loss of power steering or alternator function.

Several BM Mazda 3 owners report rattles from the passenger-side dashboard area, particularly over rough surfaces.
