Mazda MX-5 NA 1.6

1989-1998Last reviewed: April 2026 · How this report is builtApril 2026

1989-1998 · 1.6L B6-ZE (90-115 hp) DOHC 16-valve inline-4 petrol

The car that revived the lightweight roadster. The original MX-5 NA with the 1.6-litre B6-ZE engine is one of the most celebrated affordable sports cars ever built, with over 400,000 NA-generation units sold worldwide between 1989 and 1998. The engine is mechanically simple and extremely durable, parts are cheap and widely available, and the ownership community is enormous. The biggest threat to any NA is not mechanical failure but structural rust.

Bulletproof B6-ZE engine Cheap parts, huge community
Structural rust is near-inevitable Soft top degrades with age
Buy if: You want the purest lightweight roadster experience and can find a rust-free example with documented maintenance history.
Avoid if: You cannot inspect the sills and chassis rails properly, or need a car for daily winter driving on salted roads.
Expected Annual Maintenance Costs

Common Problems
Mechanically robust, but rust is the real enemy
The 1.6 B6-ZE engine is exceptionally reliable and many examples exceed 200,000 km without major engine work. The gearbox is strong, parts are cheap, and the community is vast. However, structural rust in the sills and chassis rails is a serious and expensive problem on most surviving cars. A rust-free NA with maintenance history is worth significantly more than a mechanically perfect car with compromised sills. Budget for soft top and radiator replacement as near-certainties on any car this age.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Fuel filler non-return valve sticking (various production years) Check with VIN
Takata airbag inflator (1995-1998 models with airbags) Check with VIN
Due to the age of NA MX-5 models (1989-1998), most recalls have been completed or the affected components replaced during routine maintenance. Contact Mazda with the VIN to verify recall status. European models can be checked through the Mazda Europe recall portal at mazda.eu.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years / 100,000 km) Expired on all NA models
Rust perforation warranty Expired (typically 6 years from new)
Extended warranty availability Not available for cars this age
All NA MX-5 models are decades beyond their original factory warranty. No manufacturer or third-party extended warranties are available for cars of this age. All repairs are at the owner's expense. A thorough pre-purchase inspection is essential.

Mazda MX-5 NB 1.8 1998-2005 Direct successor with a stronger 1.8 engine. Same rust concerns but slightly better corrosion protection. Timing belt is also required. Toyota GT86 ZN6 2012-2021 Modern lightweight coupe with similar philosophy. Some subframe corrosion risk, and oil leaks from timing cover are common. Higher purchase price. Mazda MX-5 1.5 Skyactiv-G ND 2015-present Current generation with a modern engine. Far fewer issues overall but gearbox synchro wear on early cars. Significantly more expensive to buy. Mazda MX-5 NC 2.0 2005-2015 Heavier but more refined. Uses a timing chain instead of belt. Less rust-prone than the NA but still needs underbody checks. Mazda MX-5 ND 2.0 2015-present More powerful modern MX-5. Very reliable Skyactiv engine but gearbox is known to be fragile under hard use. Much higher purchase price.
