The original lightweight roadster that redefined the affordable sports car market. The 1.8-litre NA arrived in 1994 with the more powerful BP engine, offering 131 hp and a noticeable improvement over the 1.6. With a kerb weight under 1,000 kg, rear-wheel drive, and one of the best manual gearboxes ever fitted to a production car, it remains a benchmark for driving enjoyment. The mechanical simplicity of these cars keeps them easy and affordable to maintain, though at 28-35 years old, corrosion is now the primary threat to survivability.· more· less

Common Problems
Mechanically robust, but age and rust are the real enemies
The 1.8 BP engine is widely regarded as one of the most reliable sports car engines of its era, and many examples have exceeded 300,000 km with proper maintenance. The gearbox and differential are similarly durable. The primary ownership risks are age-related rather than design flaws: structural rust, perished cooling components, and soft top deterioration. A well-maintained, rust-free NA can be genuinely cheap to run, but a neglected one can absorb thousands in welding and restoration work. The mechanical simplicity that makes the NA so enjoyable to drive also makes it relatively affordable to repair when things do go wrong.

Fuel tank vapour hose routing (certain 1994-1997 models) Verify with VIN
Very few recalls were issued for the NA MX-5 due to its mechanical simplicity. Contact Mazda with the VIN to verify whether any outstanding recalls apply. Given the age of these cars, most recall work has long been completed.

Factory warranty (3 years / 100,000 km) Expired on all NA models
Rust perforation warranty (6 years) Expired on all NA models
Aftermarket warranty availability Generally not available for cars this old
All NA MX-5 models are decades past their original factory warranty. Extended or aftermarket warranties are typically not available for vehicles over 20 years old. Budget accordingly for all repairs.

↔ Also consider

Mazda MX-5 1.6 NA
Mazda MX-5 1.6 NA 1989-1997
Same body, same rust issues. The 1.6 B6 engine is slightly less powerful and early models had the short-nose crank defect. The 1.8 avoids that problem entirely.
Toyota GT86 ZN6
Toyota GT86 ZN6 2012-2021
Modern alternative with similar driving philosophy. Far less rust risk and more daily-usable, but heavier and less raw. Known for oil consumption on the FA20 boxer engine.
Porsche Boxster 2.7 986
Porsche Boxster 2.7 986 1996-2004
More powerful and refined, but significantly more expensive to maintain. The IMS bearing failure risk is a well-known concern on early cars.
Mazda MX-5 1.8 NB
Mazda MX-5 1.8 NB 1998-2005
Direct successor with the same BP engine in a stiffer body. Generally less rusty due to younger age and improved corrosion protection. Fewer drainage issues than the NA.
BMW Z3 2.0 E36
BMW Z3 2.0 E36 1995-2002
Heavier and less nimble, but more powerful and more comfortable on motorways. BMW parts are more expensive and the subframe mounts need checking.
