The first-generation Mazda 6 replaced the aging 626 and brought a more dynamic, European-flavored design to the mid-size segment. The 1.8 MZR is the entry-level petrol, a Ford-Mazda co-developed naturally aspirated four-cylinder with timing chain and a 5-speed manual gearbox. With 120 hp it is comfortable rather than fast, but the engine is proven and can exceed 300,000 km with proper oil changes. Available as sedan, hatchback, and estate.· more· less

Buy if: You want an affordable, spacious mid-size car with a simple petrol engine and can verify the underside is rust-free on a lift inspection.
Avoid if: You live in a road-salt region and cannot inspect the subframe and rear arches for corrosion, or you need more than 120 hp for regular motorway driving.

Common Problems
Simple engine, but rust is the main ownership risk
The 1.8 MZR is one of the most straightforward engines available in the GG Mazda 6. It uses a timing chain (no belt replacement needed), has no turbo, no direct injection, and no particulate filter. The engine itself is robust and proven. However, the GG generation has poor anti-corrosion treatment, making subframe and body rust the most significant ownership risk, particularly for cars that have spent time in Northern or Central European countries with road salt. A thorough underside inspection on a lift is essential before purchase. Cars from Southern Europe or those with documented underside protection can be reliable long-term transport.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Takata airbag inflator (2002-2005 production, passenger side) Critical - verify completed
Fuel pump cap cracking and fuel tank cap loosening (2005-2007 production) Verify completed
Contact a Mazda dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The Takata airbag recall is critical and affects many Mazda 6 GG models produced between 2002 and 2005. Some vehicles may have received temporary replacement airbags that themselves need replacing with the final remedy parts.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years / 100,000 km) Expired on all GG models
Rust perforation warranty (6 years) Expired on all GG models
All Mazda 6 GG models are well outside their original factory warranty and rust perforation warranty. No extended warranty programs are available from Mazda for this generation. Third-party warranties may be available but typically exclude pre-existing corrosion.
