The first-generation Mazda 3 (BK) shares the Ford C1 platform with the Focus Mk2 and Volvo S40. The 1.6 CD diesel uses the PSA-sourced DV6 engine also found in Peugeot, Citroen and Ford models. It offers good fuel economy and adequate motorway performance, but inherits the DV6's well-documented weak points: leaking injector seals leading to turbo oil starvation, DPF clogging on short trips, and a need for strict oil change discipline. The Mazda body adds its own concern: BK-generation rust on wheel arches and sills, which is worse than on the Ford Focus equivalent.· more· less

Economical DV6 diesel engine Good handling, practical layout
Injector seal to turbo failure chain Rust-prone body, especially arches
Buy if: You do regular longer journeys, can verify the turbo oil feed is clean, and find one with complete service history and minimal body corrosion.
Avoid if: The car was primarily used for short urban trips, has unknown service history, or shows any sign of rust on the wheel arches or sills.

Common Problems
Requires diligent maintenance and rust vigilance
The Mazda 3 BK 1.6 CD inherits the DV6 diesel engine's well-known injector-to-turbo failure chain, which demands strict oil change discipline and proactive injector seal replacement. The Mazda body adds significant rust concerns that its Ford Focus platform sibling largely avoids. With complete service history, correct oil specification, and regular longer journeys to keep the DPF healthy, the car can be reasonably reliable. However, a neglected example with short-trip history and visible corrosion can become expensive quickly.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Steering wheel logo/airbag cover fragmentation risk (Feb 2003 - Jun 2006 production) Verify completed
Oil supply bore to camshaft bearings may cause engine seizure (diesel models) Verify completed
Incorrect motor mount fasteners on diesel models Verify completed
Tailgate gas strut corrosion (salt region vehicles) Verify if applicable
Contact a Mazda dealer with the VIN to verify all recall work has been completed. The airbag cover recall affected over 264,000 vehicles in Europe and is particularly important for safety. The oil supply bore recall is critical for diesel models as it can cause engine seizure.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years / 100,000 km) Expired on all BK models
Rust perforation warranty (6 years) Expired on all BK models
All Mazda 3 BK models are well outside their original 3-year factory warranty and 6-year rust perforation warranty. No extended warranty programmes are available from Mazda for this generation. Third-party warranty providers may offer coverage but typically exclude pre-existing conditions and high-mileage diesel components.
