The 1.8 Skyactiv-D arrived with the fourth-generation Mazda 3 in 2019 as a replacement for the 1.5 diesel, offering more torque (270 Nm) and 116 hp. Mazda used its low-compression diesel design to meet Euro 6d-Temp emissions without an AdBlue SCR system, relying instead on heavy EGR use. The engine was only sold in Europe from 2019 to 2021 before being dropped due to tightening emissions rules, leaving a relatively small parc of cars. Mechanically it shares the Skyactiv-D family's sensitivity to short-trip driving and oil specification.· more· less

Buy if: You drive 15,000+ km/year with regular motorway use and can commit to strict 10,000 km oil changes with the correct ACEA C3 low-ash oil.
Avoid if: Your driving is mostly short urban trips under 15 km, or you cannot find evidence of motorway use and correct oil specification in the service history.

Common Problems
Reliable with the right driving profile, but punishes short-trip use
The 1.8 Skyactiv-D can be a refined and economical engine when driven regularly on motorways and maintained with the correct low-ash oil at shortened intervals. It avoids the head gasket weakness of the larger 2.2 Skyactiv-D and the vacuum pump recall that affected earlier 1.5 diesels. However, it remains highly sensitive to driving pattern: short urban trips trigger a cascade of EGR clogging, DPF regeneration failures, and oil dilution that can lead to expensive injector or camshaft damage. The engine is also rare in Europe (2019-2021 only), so specialist knowledge is concentrated at Mazda dealers. Cars with documented motorway use, complete service history, and correct oil specification are the safest buys.

Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Smart Brake Support false activation (AK072A) - production 6 Nov 2018 to 19 Oct 2019 Critical - verify completed
Front brake caliper mounting bolt torque (2020 production, Oct 2019-Mar 2020) Verify completed
Denso low-pressure fuel pump impeller (select 2018-2019 production) Verify completed
Air-fuel ratio control software (production June 14 - October 1 2019) Verify completed
The SBS recall is safety-critical and should be verified completed before any test drive on a public road. Contact a Mazda dealer with the VIN to confirm all recalls have been completed.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years / 100,000 km) Expired on all 2019-2021 BP diesels
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Active on all BP models
Extended warranty Limited availability - check with Mazda dealer
All Mazda 3 BP 1.8 Skyactiv-D models are outside their original 3-year / 100,000 km factory warranty. The 12-year rust perforation warranty remains active. Mazda's extended warranty options are limited for diesel models; third-party warranties often exclude pre-existing diesel emission system faults (DPF, EGR, injectors).
