The first-generation CX-5 was a breakthrough for Mazda, combining SUV practicality with car-like handling and the efficient Skyactiv platform. The 2.0 petrol is the simpler and more reliable choice over the 2.2 diesel, avoiding head gasket, DPF, and EGR concerns entirely. With no turbo, no timing belt, and a conventional naturally aspirated setup, serious mechanical failures are rare. Main ownership concerns are carbon buildup on the direct-injection intake valves at higher mileage, and a few well-known platform issues shared across CX-5 generations.· more· less

Very reliable engine, few failures Good handling for a compact SUV
Carbon buildup on intake valves Windscreen prone to stress cracks
Buy if: You want a reliable compact SUV with low running costs and can live with the modest power of the naturally aspirated 2.0-litre engine.
Avoid if: You need strong motorway overtaking performance or regularly tow, as the 165 hp feels underpowered in a heavier SUV body.

Common Problems
One of the more reliable compact SUVs of its era
The 2.0 Skyactiv-G petrol CX-5 KE avoids the serious issues that plague its diesel sibling. The naturally aspirated engine has no turbo to fail, no DPF to clog, no head gasket weakness, and uses a timing chain that does not require scheduled replacement. The most common issues are the power folding mirrors (cheap to fix with aftermarket parts), windscreen stress fractures, and typical suspension wear items. Carbon buildup on intake valves is inherent to all GDI engines but is less severe on the Skyactiv than many competitors. With regular maintenance and a verified recall history, this is a sensible and affordable used SUV.
