First-generation Mazda 3 (BK) shares the Ford C1 platform with the Focus Mk2 and Volvo S40, but uses Mazda's own MZR LF 2.0-litre petrol engine. Widely regarded as the most reliable Mazda 3 generation, ahead of the BL that followed. Cars are now 16-22 years old, so condition matters more than mileage. Watch for timing chain rattle, engine mount failure, rear compliance bushing wear and surface rust on suspension components.· more· less

Common Problems
Mechanically robust but age-related wear is everywhere
The MZR engine is genuinely robust and the BK is the most reliable Mazda 3 generation. The risks here are almost all age-related: timing chain wear, engine mounts, suspension bushings, sway bar links and rust on chassis components. A well-maintained example with documented service can be cheap to keep, but a tired one will need €2,000-4,000 of catch-up work in the first year of ownership. Manual transmission cars are noticeably more reliable than the 4-speed automatic.

Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Engine mount bolt and No.4 mount bracket (2007 Mazdaspeed/MPS) Verify if applicable
Various market-specific recalls (airbag, fuel pump) Verify with VIN
Contact a Mazda dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The BK has had several smaller market-specific recalls over its life.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years) Expired on all BK models
Anti-perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on all BK models
Extended warranty availability Limited - most third-party warranties decline cars over 15 years old
All BK Mazda 3s are now well outside their original 3-year factory warranty and the 12-year anti-perforation warranty. At this age you are buying without manufacturer support.
