The first-generation Mazda 6 brought sharp handling and sporty styling to the mid-size segment. The 2.3 MZR is the top naturally aspirated petrol option, producing 166 hp from a DOHC inline-four with timing chain. Available as sedan, hatchback (Sport), and estate (Wagon) with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic. Parts are inexpensive and widely available, though at this age rust inspection and cooling system condition are the most important pre-purchase checks.· more· less

Common Problems
Durable engine, but age-related issues need careful checking
The 2.3 MZR is a proven and durable engine that can exceed 250,000 km with regular oil changes. The main ownership risks at this age are structural corrosion (particularly subframe and rear arches), cooling fan module failure, and worn engine mounts. Manual gearbox cars are notably more reliable than automatics. Early production cars (2003-2005) are more prone to oil consumption. Most issues are well-documented and affordable to fix if caught early, but a thorough pre-purchase inspection of the underbody and cooling system is essential.

Volkswagen Passat 2.0 FSI B6 2005-2010
Direct injection causes severe carbon buildup on intake valves. Cam follower and HPFP wear need monitoring. Generally higher maintenance than the Mazda.
BMW 320i E90
BMW 320i E90 2005-2011
More refined but costlier to maintain. N46 engine has valvetronic failures and multiple oil leak points. Higher risk costs than the MZR.
Mazda 6 2.0 Skyactiv-G GJ
Mazda 6 2.0 Skyactiv-G GJ 2012-2023
Much newer third generation with improved reliability overall. Lower risk costs but carbon buildup from direct injection is the main concern.
