Mazda 5 1.8 CR

The Mazda 5 CR has well-documented corrosion problems that were a known weakness even during its production years. Rust typically starts on the inner sills, rear wheel arches, and subframe mounting points. In salt-road climates across northern and western Europe, corrosion can begin within 5-7 years and progress to structural levels within 10-15 years. Cars without aftermarket cavity wax treatment are particularly vulnerable. Repair costs range from around €500 for minor cosmetic treatment to €2,000-3,000 for structural sill or subframe repairs. Advanced corrosion can make the car uneconomical to repair and may result in TUV/MOT failure. A thorough underbody inspection on a lift is essential before any purchase.

The original rear shock absorber top mounts are made from aluminum, which is prone to galvanic corrosion when exposed to road salt and moisture. As the mount weakens, it can fracture entirely, producing a loud rattling noise over bumps. This typically occurs between 60,000-100,000 km in salt-road climates. Mazda does not sell the top mount separately, requiring purchase of the complete shock absorber assembly. Most aftermarket rear shocks do not include this mount either. Some owners have successfully adapted a Mazda CX-3 top mount (part DA6A-28-380) as a more affordable workaround. Replacing both rear shocks with OEM assemblies at an independent workshop costs €300-600.

The Mazda 5 suspension is widely considered somewhat undersized for a vehicle that regularly carries six passengers and luggage. Control arm bushings, sway bar link joints, and stabilizer bar bushings are common wear items that typically need attention between 80,000-120,000 km. Mazda issued a TSB for sway bar bushing wear on this model. Rear coil springs can also break due to corrosion at the lower spring seat, where moisture and road debris accumulate. If one spring has broken, the other typically follows soon, so springs should be replaced in pairs. A full front suspension refresh (both lower control arms, sway bar links, and bushings) costs €400-600 at an independent workshop. Rear spring replacement adds approximately €200-300 per pair.

Mazda acknowledged that a batch of power steering hoses fitted to 2005-2009 Mazda 5 and Mazda 3 models can corrode internally over time. The corroded material contaminates the power steering fluid, which then fouls and overheats the pump. Symptoms include intermittent loss of power assistance, a whining noise from the pump, and heavy steering at low speeds. The steering may temporarily recover after the system cools down or the car is restarted. Mazda issued TSB 06-002/09 addressing this concern and requires both the hoses and pump to be replaced together. At an independent workshop, expect €500-900 for a full pump and hose replacement including a fluid flush.

The AC compressor electric clutch is a known weak point on 2006-2010 Mazda 5 models. The clutch engages and disengages the compressor from the serpentine belt; when it fails, the AC stops producing cold air entirely. Failure typically occurs between 60,000-80,000 km. In some cases, only the clutch assembly needs replacing (available as a separate kit for approximately €150-250 in parts), which keeps total repair cost around €400-500. If the compressor internals are also damaged, full compressor replacement costs €600-800 at an independent workshop.

The right-hand (passenger side) engine mount is hydraulic and the most common to fail. It typically wears between 60,000-100,000 km, causing noticeable vibration at idle, especially in Drive with the brake held on automatic-equipped cars. The mount rubber breaks down and the hydraulic damping fluid leaks out. This is the same failure pattern seen on the Mazda 3 BK, which shares the platform. Replacement at an independent workshop costs €200-400 including parts and labor. OEM mounts from Mazda tend to last longer than budget aftermarket alternatives.

The Bluetooth hands-free module fitted to 2006-2010 Mazda 5 models can develop a fault where it fails to enter sleep mode when the ignition is turned off. This results in a parasitic current draw of 200-300 mA (normal is 30-40 mA), which can flatten the battery within 2-3 days if the car is parked. The simplest fix is to disconnect the module, which is located behind the glovebox. A replacement module costs approximately €100-200. Many owners simply disconnect the unit if they do not use the Bluetooth function. Some Mazda dealers can also apply a software update that corrects the shutdown sequence.
