The second-generation Mazda 3 with the 2.2 MZR-CD diesel was the most powerful diesel option in its compact class at launch. The R2AA engine delivers 360-400 Nm of torque depending on tune and achieves around 5.5 l/100 km on the motorway, paired with one of the best chassis in its segment. However, this is Mazda's pre-Skyactiv diesel design, and the R2AA carries a well-documented set of reliability concerns that are more serious than those on the later Skyactiv-D replacement.· more· less

Strong torque, good motorway economy Sharp chassis and handling
Oil strainer blockage risk Timing chain stretches prematurely
Buy if: You do regular motorway driving, can verify injector seal replacement history, and find one with documented oil changes every 10,000 km or less.
Avoid if: The car was primarily used for short urban trips, service records are missing, or the engine shows any cold-start rattling.

Common Problems
Higher-risk diesel that demands strict maintenance discipline
The 2.2 MZR-CD is a capable engine with strong performance, but it carries a specific and dangerous failure mode. The injector seal degradation leading to oil strainer blockage can destroy the engine without warning if preventive maintenance is neglected. Combined with premature timing chain stretch and a DPF regeneration strategy that punishes short-trip driving, this engine requires an owner who follows shortened oil change intervals (10,000 km maximum), replaces injector seals proactively, and drives regular motorway distances. With that level of care, many examples reach 200,000+ km. Without it, catastrophic failure between 80,000 and 130,000 km is well documented on owner forums.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Takata airbag inflator (driver and/or passenger side, 2009-2013 production) Critical - verify completed
Timing chain monitoring software update (2012 service campaign, adds chain stretch detection) Verify if applicable
Liftgate stay bracket corrosion (2009-2013 hatchback, bracket can crack from rust) Verify completed
Seat adjuster mechanism fracture (pre-2010 production models) Verify if applicable
Contact a Mazda dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls and service campaigns have been completed. The Takata airbag recall is a safety-critical item on all 2009-2013 Mazda 3 models. The timing chain service campaign was not a formal recall but a goodwill repair programme for early R2AA engines.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years / 100,000 km) Expired on all used cars
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply on 2013 models until 2025
Extended warranty Third-party only, limited for this age
All Mazda 3 BL models are well outside their original 3-year / 100,000 km factory warranty. Mazda's 12-year rust perforation warranty may still cover the very latest production models. Third-party extended warranties are available but typically exclude pre-existing conditions and high-wear diesel components like turbo, DPF, and clutch.

Mazda 3 2.0 BL
Mazda 3 2.0 BL 2009-2013
Same platform with the naturally aspirated MZR petrol. No DPF, no turbo, no injector seal risk. Significantly more reliable but higher fuel consumption.
Ford Focus 1.6 TDCi Mk2
Ford Focus 1.6 TDCi Mk2 2004-2011
Compact diesel competitor with the PSA DV6 engine. Similar turbo and DPF concerns, plus expensive dual mass flywheel and steering rack failures.
Honda Civic 2.2 i-CTDi FK
Honda Civic 2.2 i-CTDi FK 2012-2015
Honda's own diesel is more robust overall. DMF and DPF are the main worries, but there is no equivalent of the MZR-CD oil strainer problem.
Mazda 3 2.0 CD BK
Mazda 3 2.0 CD BK 2005-2009
Previous generation with the earlier MZR-CD diesel. Also suffers from oil strainer and high-pressure fuel pump issues. Neither generation is low-risk.
Volkswagen Golf 1.6 TDI Mk6
Volkswagen Golf 1.6 TDI Mk6 2009-2013
Comparable compact diesel. Known for Siemens piezo injector and EGR problems, but generally more predictable long-term with proper maintenance.
