The facelifted CX-3 was the first Mazda to receive the 1.8 Skyactiv-D diesel, replacing the smaller 1.5 unit from mid-2018. Built on the Mazda 2 platform, it offers a premium-feeling cabin and sharp handling for a subcompact crossover. The 1.8 diesel produces 116 hp and 270 Nm, paired exclusively with a 6-speed manual in Europe. Mazda's low-compression diesel design avoids AdBlue/SCR, relying instead on heavy EGR recirculation to meet Euro 6d-Temp, which makes it sensitive to short-trip driving. European sales ended in December 2021.· more· less

Buy if: You drive 15,000+ km/year with regular motorway use and can commit to strict oil change intervals with ACEA C3 low-ash oil.
Avoid if: Most of your driving is short urban trips under 15 km, or you cannot verify that the correct oil specification was used throughout the service history.

Common Problems
Reliable with motorway use, risky for urban-only driving
The 1.8 Skyactiv-D is a well-engineered diesel that rewards consistent motorway driving. Its main vulnerability is the heavy EGR strategy Mazda uses instead of AdBlue, which makes the engine particularly sensitive to driving pattern. Cars driven predominantly on short urban trips accumulate carbon much faster, leading to cascading issues with the EGR, DPF, and oil quality. With proper driving habits, correct oil specification (ACEA C3), and strict service intervals of 10,000-12,000 km, the engine can deliver reliable service well past 150,000 km. The lack of an AdBlue system simplifies one area of maintenance but shifts the emissions burden onto components that clog with soot.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Low-pressure fuel pump impeller cracking (Oct 2017 - May 2020 production) Critical - verify completed
Rearview camera wiring harness wear (2016-2021 CX-3) Verify completed
Tailgate strut water ingress and corrosion (early 2015-2016 production) Verify if applicable
Contact a Mazda dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The fuel pump recall is particularly important as pump failure can cause sudden engine stalling while driving.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years / 100,000 km) Expired on all 2018-2021 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still be active on 2018+ models
Extended warranty Available through Mazda dealers, terms vary by country
All CX-3 1.8 Skyactiv-D models are outside their original 3-year factory warranty. Mazda offers a 12-year rust perforation warranty that may still be active on later production cars.
