The second-generation Mazda 6 brought sharper styling and a more refined cabin to the mid-size segment. The 1.8 MZR is the entry-level petrol, a Ford-Mazda co-developed naturally aspirated four-cylinder with timing chain and a simple 5-speed manual. With 120 hp it is adequate rather than quick, but the engine is proven and can exceed 300,000 km with proper oil changes. Available as sedan, hatchback, and estate.· more· less

EPS steering rack can fail Rust-prone in salt-road regions
Buy if: You want a spacious, affordable mid-sizer with low running costs and can verify the underside is rust-free and the steering feels consistent in both directions.
Avoid if: You live in a heavy road-salt region and the car has no underside protection, or you need more than 120 hp for regular motorway merging.

Common Problems
Simple and reliable, but check for rust
The 1.8 MZR is one of the most straightforward engines in the GH Mazda 6 range. It uses a timing chain (no belt replacement needed), has no turbo, no direct injection carbon buildup concerns, and no DPF. The main ownership risk is body and subframe corrosion, which varies dramatically by region and maintenance history. Cars from Southern Europe or those with documented underside treatment can be excellent long-term runners. The electric power steering rack is the most expensive potential repair, but failures are not widespread.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Takata airbag inflator (2007-2012 production) Critical - verify completed
Front subframe corrosion (2008-2010 production, primarily North American recall but same design in Europe) Verify with VIN
Contact a Mazda dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The Takata airbag recall is critical and affects all GH Mazda 6 models. Some vehicles may have received temporary replacement airbags that themselves need replacing with the final remedy parts.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years / 100,000 km) Expired on all GH models
Rust perforation warranty (typically 6 years) Expired
Extended warranty Third-party options available
All Mazda 6 GH models are well outside their original 3-year factory warranty and rust perforation warranty. Third-party extended warranty providers may still offer coverage, but pre-existing conditions will typically be excluded.

Mazda 6 2.0 Skyactiv-G GJ 2012-2023
Successor generation with newer Skyactiv engine. More refined and even more reliable. Carbon buildup on direct injection and engine mount wear are the main concerns.
Ford Mondeo Mk4 2.0 TDCi
Ford Mondeo Mk4 2.0 TDCi 2007-2014
More spacious diesel alternative. Durable engine but DPF clogging and dual mass flywheel failures add complexity the Mazda avoids.
Volkswagen Passat B7 1.4 TSI
Volkswagen Passat B7 1.4 TSI 2010-2014
Similar segment positioning. Known timing chain tensioner weakness on the EA111 engine and DQ200 DSG issues make the Mazda simpler to own.
Opel Insignia A 1.6 Turbo
Opel Insignia A 1.6 Turbo 2008-2017
Spacious competitor with turbo engine. Higher oil consumption and faster suspension wear give the Mazda a reliability edge.
Mazda 6 2.2 Skyactiv-D GJ
Mazda 6 2.2 Skyactiv-D GJ 2012-2020
Diesel successor with strong torque. Head gasket and oil dilution risks make it less straightforward than the simple 1.8 petrol.
